Turner - Yelverton
Margie Faye Yelverton of Dudley became the wife of Owen Turner Jr. April 24 at 1 p.m.
Dr. R.L. Dawson officiated at the double-ring ceremony at Woods Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
The bride is the daughter of Vera A. Yelverton of Brooklyn, N.Y., and George Yelverton of Goldsboro. She is the granddaughter of Braxton and Sarah F. Exum Simmons of LaGrange.
Parents of the groom are Owen Turner Sr. of Smithfield and the late Bella Mae Turner. He is the grandson of the late Willard and Glendora Turner of Smithfield.
Given in marriage by her parents and escorted by her brother, George Yelverton Jr. of Elmhurst, N.Y., the bride wore an off-the-shoulder gown of ivory matte satin with a sweetheart neckline, cap sleeves and a Basque waistline. Venise lace appliqués adorned the bodice front skirt inset panel and around the full skirt hemline that extended into a semi-cathedral train.
She chose an open crown headpiece embellished with satin rosettes and Swarovski crystals with an ivory double-layered shoulder-length silk illusion veil.
Lorice Worrells and Susie Sanders of Pikeville were matrons of honor. Earlene Edwards of Greensboro was maid of honor. Bridal attendants were Diane Carson of Norfolk, Va., Louise Adams, Ruthie Eason and Dora Mustipher of Clayton and Melva Moses of Brooklyn.
Charles Turner of Springville, N.Y., brother, and Raymond Sanders Jr., cousin, were best men. James Edward Sanders of Selma was the groomsman. Ushers were Ivory J. Yelverton, Leslie P. King and Lee Carson of Norfolk, Dennis Adams, Shelton Eason and Felix Mustipher of Clayton and Robert Moses of Brooklyn.
Charles Turner was ring bearer.
Cleo Rowe and Beverly Banks directed the ceremony. Presiding at the registers were Rosalyn Pitts and Bridgette Brewington.
Hostesses were Lillie Simmons, Shelia Durham, Doris Pridgen, Shonda Murphy, Jackie Spruill, Teresa Yelverton and Brenda Grant.
Carmellas Yelverton, daughter of the bride, and Angela Liscomb, daughter of the groom, were readers.
A program of wedding music was provided by Isaiah Smith Jr., musician, and the Rev. Jerry Dortch, pianist and vocalist.
After a wedding trip to the Bahamas, the couple is residing in Smithfield.
The bride is a 1971 graduate of Goldsboro High School and a 1977 graduate of Wayne Community College. She is employed as a health care technician at Cherry Hospital.
The groom graduated from Johnson Central High School. He is retired from General Motors of Flint, Mich.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the church multipurpose building. Carolyn Moore and Lillie Simmons were reception assistants.
Out-of-town guests were from New York and Maryland.
On April 24, the bride’s mother, sisters and brothers held an after-five celebration at Best Western Inn.
The groom’s cousin and brother held a bachelor party April 22 at Madison’s.
Co-workers held a breakfast April 16 at Cherry Hospital.
On March 6, Susie Sanders, friend, and Lorice Worrells, sister, held a miscellaneous shower at Madison’s.
A prewedding shower was held Jan. 17 at the home of the bride.
The groom’s family held a rehearsal dinner.
