Aycock turns back Cardinal Gibbons

WILSON -- Cody Whaley scattered four hits over five innings, Blake Gipson went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Charles B. Aycock turned back Cap 7 pillar Cardinal Gibbons, 6-2, on Monday during second-round play of the Golden Leaf Invitational at Fleming Stadium.

The Golden Falcons now stand 11-3 this season.

Whaley allowed a pair of runs to open the affair, then settled into a familiar rhythm and denied the Crusaders (9-4 overall) any further scoring opportunities.

Gipson spurred the CBA offense with another solid day at the plate, and was joined by Carson Smitherman, who went 1 for 2 with two RBI.

Winston-Salem State commit Tyler Daniels also scored a pair of runners, while Luke Frederick contributed two base hits.

Leading 5-2 in the sixth, Whaley ceded the cliff to Jordan Gay, who navigated the final six outs with no issue.

CBA completes its tour of Wilson today, when it faces Faith Christian of Rocky Mount at Fike High School.

First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

WCDS falls to Hunt

WILSON -- Avery Browing fashioned a pair of base hits from the leadoff spot on Monday, but was the lone bright in Wayne Country Day's 10-0 setback to Hunt High School on day two of the Golden Leaf Invitational.

The Chargers now stand 7-2 on the season.

Case Kermode and Ryan Smith had the only other base hits for WCDS, which was victimized by five Hunt runs in the third inning.

Tanner Willman, Smith and Jack Talton each made appearances on the hill for Wayne Country Day, with Willman's stint of two frames lasting the longest.

WCDS completes the tournament today with a matchup versus Farmville Central.

First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Errors doom Rosewood

FARMVILLE -- Rosewood committed nine errors on Monday in a 7-2 setback to Corinth Holders at the Golden Leaf Invitational.

The Eagles were paced offensively by University of Mount Olive commit Kolby Harris, who went 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI. Tucker Chapin also performed ably for the purple and gold, tendering a pair of base hits and an RBI.

Starter Jonathan Peacock absorbed the loss for Rosewood (6-3), allowing just one earned run in six innings while striking out four.

The Eagles return to the diamond today versus South Granville at Hunt High School. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
