GREENVILLE -- Zarion Sharpe threw a one-hitter as top-seeded Oakwood School eliminated Wayne Country Day, 3-0, from the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs on Monday afternoon.
The Chargers' Jacob Magera doubled off Sharpe, who threw his sixth complete game of the season and lowered his earned run average to a microscopic 0.38. He won all three meetings against WCDS this season.
"Sharpe is very good on the mound," Chargers head coach Michael Taylor said. "We only gave up three hits on the day, but Oakwood took (advantage of) some of (our) mistakes and ran with them."
Mitch Turnage started and yielded two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks in 32/3 innings. John Strickland provided 21/3 innings of one-hit, three-strikeout relief. The duo combined for eight strikeouts on the hill.
"I thought Mitch and John pitched well enough for us to win, but today was not our day," said Taylor, whose team finished 12-8-1 this season. "I am extremely proud of the boys and everything they did this year. We will be back next year."
Three WCDS seniors played their final game -- Magera, Parker Smith and Patrick Hall.
Oakwood (22-2 overall) faces Lawrence Academy in the best-of-three state championship series, which begins Friday at historic Fleming Stadium in Wilson.
