WILSON -- Mike Moore scored seven of his team-high 18 points off the bench during a first-half scoring run and hit 3 of 4 free throws in the final 37 seconds as the University of Mount Olive defeated archrival Barton, 73-67, in a Conference Carolinas men's basketball game Thursday evening.
UMO converted eight of its final 10 free throws and shot 67.9 percent (19 of 28) from the line for the game.
Dory Hines narrowly missed his fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while Dontrell Brite finished with 13 points and Jordan McCain added 10 points.
Hines hit 3 of 4 free throws and Mount Olive led 65-60 with 55 seconds left to play in regulation. Barton made it a one-possession game on Khari Faison's putback dunk with 47 seconds left, but Ewon Wright answered with a pair of free throws two seconds later.
The lead stayed at two possessions the rest of the game.
Moore pulled down the rebound on a Barton miss and hit 1-of-2 free throws, then sank a pair of free throws after another Bulldog miss to give the Trojans a three-possession lead, 70-62, with 28 seconds remaining.
Chris Flemmings sank two free throws on Barton's next possession and after McCain hit a pair of free throws for Mount Olive, Flemmings hit a 3-pointer to pull the Bulldogs within 72-67 at the 15-second mark.
Wright hit 1-of-2 free throws on the Trojans' next possession. Moore pulled down his eighth rebound on a Barton missed 3-point attempt and UMO ran out the clock.
Women's game
WILSON -- Ty Wallace posted her third straight career-breaking rebound performance as the University of Mount Olive handed Barton a 69-62 loss in their Conference Carolinas women's basketball game contested at Wilson Gymnasium.
Katie Paschal led a quartet of Trojan players in double figures with 19 points. Wallace's career night was capped with her third consecutive double-double --10 points and 15 rebounds. Joneiqua Gary finished with 13 points.
Jasmine McDonald contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.
Barton's 11-0 run over a two-minute period trimmed UMO's advantage to a single basket. After two Trojan free throws, Ashley Thornton drained a 3-pointer to make it 61-60.
McDonald silenced the crowd with back-to-back layups, which provided a five-point cushion. However, Brianna Thomas hit a jumper, which trimmed the deficit to three points with 47 seconds left to play.
Gary put the game out of reach with a 4 of 4 effort at the free throw line.
UMO extended its win streak to three games and won for the second time on Barton's court in the last three years.
The Trojans return home Saturday to face North Greenville during the 31st annual Church Night. The women tip off at 5 p.m., followed by the men's game.
General admission is $1.
