Two teams desperately searching for a victory met on the soccer field at Wayne Country Day on Tuesday afternoon.
The Chargers found what they were looking for.
Hayes Gerrard scored a pair of goals and Wayne Country Day defeated archrival Greenfield 3-0. The victory was the second of the season for the Chargers and the first in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play.
"I feel like we got the result that we earned," Wayne Country Day head coach Steve Ellis said. "There have been a few games this season where I thought our play was better than what was reflected on the scoreboard."
The Chargers (2-5-1 overall, 1-1-0 CPIC) wasted no time jumping in front. Gerrard collected a crossing pass from Ramel Carpenter in the 10th minute and fired a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Greenfield (1-8-0, 0-2-0) stiffened defensively and the rest of the first half was played primarily between the 18-yard boxes on each end.
The second half was all Wayne Country Day.
The Chargers began to take control of the possession game early in the half and finally got an insurance goal in the 52nd minute. Gerrard collected a deflection and his shot from a low angle snuck between the keeper and the post.
"Getting the first goal was huge because it kind of settled our guys down in a rivalry game," Ellis said. "The second goal really took the pressure off and allowed us to play more freely."
Wayne Country Day capped the 3-0 final in the 68th minute when Miller Gerrard found Noah Adkins with a perfect chip pass. Adkins raced onto the ball and rolled it into a wide-open net.
The Chargers had a potential fourth goal waived off due to offsides one minute later.
"I think the last time the boys beat Greenfield here was around 2004," Ellis said. "Hopefully tonight's performance will give us a little momentum going forward in conference play."
Wayne Country Day visits Oakwood on Friday.
