Wayne County United Soccer
* May 13-14 -- Tryouts for Academy-age players (7- to 9-years-old) at 6 p.m. at Greenwood Middle School. The rainout date is May 15.
* May 20-21 -- Tryouts for Classic-age players (10- to 13-years-old) at 6 p.m. at Greenwood Middle School. The rainout date is May 24.
* May 22-23 -- Tryouts for Classic-age players (14- to 17-years-old) at 6 p.m. at Greenwood Middle School. The rainout date is May 25.
The tryout fee is $20 and will be applied to team dues if accepted. Players must provide their own cleats, shin guards and water for tryouts. A medical liability waiver must be signed.

Lexi's Angels Golf Tournament
* May 16 -- Third annual event begins at noon with a catered lunch followed by the four-man superball golf tournament which starts at 1 p.m. All proceeds from the event go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Camps
* Dazzling Diamonds -- Four-day camp is scheduled for June 17-20 from at Southern Wayne High School. Instruction begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon. The early registration deadline is May 31 and the fee is $65 per player or $60 each for two or more players from the same family. The fees increase $5 after the early registration period concludes. * Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp -- Challenger Sports is hosting a British Soccer Camp at the Goldsboro YMCA and at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base for boys and girls ages 3- to 16-years-old.
The YMCA camp is being held June 17-21 and the Seymour Johnson camp is July 15-19. Each camper receives a soccer ball and a camp T-shirt. Campers who register 45 days in advance also receive a soccer jersey.

1909 -- The Preakness Stakes is held in Maryland after 16 runnings in New York. As part of the celebration marking the return of the Preakness, the colors of the race's winner were painted onto the ornamental weathervane at Pimlico Racecourse for the first time.
1924 -- Walter Hagen wins the PGA championship with a 2-up victory over Jim Barnes.
1955 -- Sam "Toothpick" Jones of the Cubs gets a no-hitter the hard way. In the ninth inning against Pittsburgh, he walks the bases loaded and proceeds to strike out the next three batters for a 4-0 victory.
1970 -- Ernie Banks hits his 500th career home run off Pat Jarvis in the Chicago Cubs' 4-3 victory over Atlanta at Wrigley Field.
1974 -- The Boston Celtics beat the Milwaukee Bucks 102-87 to win the NBA championship in seven games.
