Girls' basketball

Goldsboro 68,

Princeton 46

* Goldsboro clinched a share of its fourth consecutive Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season conference championship with a 68-46 victory over Princeton on Friday evening.

Tyona Moses paced the Cougars with 15 points. Talaya Lassiter, Destini Covington and Brandy Johnson each added 13 points.

"This means a lot considering I have a half-young, half-seasoned team," Goldsboro head coach LaTina Bullock said. "I know it means a lot to them that they've accomplished this."

The Bulldogs' Savanna Massengill led all scorers with 18 points.

The Cougars (13-5 overall, 8-0 CC) play host to Spring Creek on Tuesday, while Princeton (12-8, 5-3) entertains Ayden-Grifton.

Wayne Country Day 28, Pope John Paul 26

* GREENVILLE -- Wayne Country Day presented head coach Eric Perry with career win No. 100 during a nail-biting, 28-26 triumph over Coastal Plains Independent 1-A foe Pope John Paul II Catholic High School on Friday evening.

Sarah Best led the Chargers with 12 points and seven rebounds. Hannah Pearson contributed seven points and nine rebounds. Karis Hawkins added five points.

WCDS returns to action next week in the season-ending conference tournament.

C.B. Aycock 38,

Southern Wayne 29

* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock capitalized on Southern Wayne's lengthy cold-shooting stretch and claimed a come-from-behind, 38-29 victory on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene Friday evening.

Golden Falcons head coach Laura Romo awarded four seniors -- Lindsay Sutton, Kayla Newsome, Racquelle Lawrence and Dejha Pontoo -- with a start in the final regular-season home game.

The Saints took advantage of the foursome's inexperience and rolled to a 17-5 lead after eight minutes of play.

"That happens on senior night, the kids are all hyped up with other things on their mind," CBA head coach Laura Romo said. "We've got very good seniors and they're great kids. They have shown a lot of leadership for us, but aren't used to gelling right there at one time and that's what threw us off our game."

C.B. Aycock (9-12 overall, 6-4 ECC) climbed back into the game as Southern Wayne went 11 1/2 minutes without a field goal. The Golden Falcons took their first lead, 20-18, on Myleah Jones' short jumper off Taylor Daniels' assist early in the third quarter.

The Saints managed just three points in the second and third quarters combined, and fell behind by as much as 10 points.

"We couldn't score, couldn't throw it in the ocean, I tell you," Saints head coach Ricky Lofton said. "You can't take anything away from Aycock. They played great defense and did what they had to do. They killed us on the boards, got second and third shots.

"That was big, too."

The Golden Falcons out-rebounded the Saints, 50-33.

Lauren Butler and Daniels emerged Aycock's top scorers with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Guard Zaria Atkins poured in a game-high 14 points for the Saints, who fell to 13-9 overall and 6-5 in the ECC.

Rosewood 74, Spring Creek 13

* Rosewood built a double-digit lead in the first four minutes and never looked back in a 74-13 win over Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek on Friday night.

The Eagles allowed the Gators just two points in the entire second half.

Alicia Burns led the way for Rosewood (13-6 overall, 6-2 CC) with 21 points. Lexi Mercer added 18 points. Krystal Yelverton finished with nine points in the win.

Jazlyn Grimes and Tysha Teachey each finished with four points for the Gators.

Spring Creek (1-17, 1-7) travels to Goldsboro on Tuesday night, while Rosewood (13-6, 6-2) is the guest of North Duplin.

Ayden-Grifton 56, North Duplin 23

* AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton seized a 16-point lead in the first quarter en route to a 56-23 win over North Duplin on Friday night.

Shaily McCarty led the Rebels with nine points.

Alexius Dixon paced the Chargers with 11 points and Cierra Dixon added 10.

North Duplin (2-19 overall, 0-8 CC) plays host to Rosewood on Tuesday.

Eastern Wayne 64, North Lenoir 26

* LAGRANGE -- Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season champion Eastern Wayne held North Lenoir to just one point in the first quarter and rolled to a 64-26 win Friday night.

Tamiya Dortch led the Warriors with 10 points. Tianna Christopher added nine markers. Elondia Grant and Naheria Hamilton each tallied eight points.

Quaya Porter led North Lenoir with 12 points.

Eastern Wayne (22-1 overall, 11-0 ECC) concludes regular-season play Tuesday at South Johnston.

Boys' basketball

Ayden-Grifton 92, North Duplin 46

* AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton led by 30 points at halftime and earned a 92-46 win over Carolina 1-A Conference opponent North Duplin on Friday night.

Tyler Royal led the Rebels with 19 points. Cody Ivey finished with 11 markers.

Jake Wright paced the Chargers with 17 points and Khalif Harper added 15.

North Duplin (2-19 overall, 1-7 CC) entertains Rosewood on Tuesday.

North Lenoir 78, Eastern Wayne 75

* LAGRANGE -- Billy Summers scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and North Lenoir held off Eastern Wayne 78-75 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference basketball action on Friday night.

Jacquez Jones added 17 points for the Hawks. Devante Sutton and Javonta King each added 11 points in the win.

Micah Smith led the way for Eastern Wayne with 23 points. Dayshawn Pridgen and Tavorise Hall each added 11 points in the defeat.

Eastern Wayne (6-17 overall, 2-9 ECC) will travel to South Johnston on Tuesday night. North Lenoir (11-12 overall, 6-4 ECC) will host Cleveland the same night.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 82, Princeton 49 -- Tyrique Tyson and Eric Bufkin both scored 13 points for the Cougars. D'onta Russell added 12 points and Kisheem Faison had 10.

* Girls' basketball: North Lenoir 34, Eastern Wayne 31 -- Curyna Chase led Eastern Wayne with 15 points. Resheena Kilpatrick added five points in the defeat.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 39, St. Mary's 24 -- John Strickland finished with 20 points for the Chargers and Hayes Gerrard had seven. Wayne Country Day (10-5, 6-2 CPIC) begins play in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference tournament on Tuesday at Greenfield.

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 36, Brogden 6 -- Norwayne finished its season undefeated with a 16-0 record. Lexi Edmundson led Norwayne with nine points. Connor Vinson added seven points. Hannah Vinson and Mackenzie Wheeler each had six points.

* Girls' basketball: Wayne Country Day 16, St. Mary's 10 -- Lillian Freeman and Anna Allen both scored seven points for the Chargers. Wayne Country Day finished the season 2-11.
