It's almost one month away.
The 14th installment of the Wayne County Men's Amateur tees off July 6 at Southern Wayne Country Club. The second round of the 54-hole medal-play competition is July 7 at Lane Tree Golf Club. Final-day action will be contested on the picturesque Walnut Creek Country Club links.
Spots remain open for the 144-player field that will vie for championships in three divisions -- Open, Senior and Super Senior. The Open division is for any eligible entrant 18 years or older. The Senior Division is for players 50- to 59-years-old, while the Super Senior Division is for those 60 and older.
Entries are due June 23 by 5 p.m.
Lionel Sutton carded a third-round 69 and defeated Clark Rose in a playoff to claim his third Open Division title a year ago. Should Sutton successfully defend his championship, he'll join Jonathan Burke as just the second four-time Open Division winner in WCMA history.
Three strokes separated the top four finishers last season. Sutton and Clark each logged a 214, while Stan Adams posted a three-day score of 215 after shooting a second-round 67. Dane Jones took fourth at 216 that included a second-round 70.
Ryan Campbell was fifth at 223.
John Zambelli etched his name in the WCMA record books last year by emerging the first golfer to capture titles in two divisions. Zambelli won the 2011 Super Senior Division crown by 11 strokes over runner-up Sprunt Hill. Three years earlier, Zambelli won his second Senior Division championship after getting his first in 2006.
Tim Rose became the sixth different golfer since 2006 and 11th overall to win the Senior Division a year ago. He edged Jeffrey Jackson by two strokes after each golfer shot one round under par during the first 36 holes.
Bill Brewer has won three Senior Division crowns, the most recent in 2007.
Highway 55 Burgers, Shakes and Fries is the title sponsor of the WCMA. Associate sponsors are Bent Design, a webpickle company; Vinson Electric Inc.; Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course; The Heritage Bank; Lane Tree Golf Club and Accu Copy of Goldsboro.
