C.B. Aycock claims Wayne County girls' track title

Charles B. Aycock earned a few spots.
Jane Hamilton might have turned her new "do" into a good-luck charm.
The Golden Falcons had just three individual champions, but used their depth in several events to compile 141 points and emerge the 2012 Wayne County Track and Field girls' team champion Wednesday afternoon at Rosewood High School.
Rosewood, which had four individual event winners, finished runner-up with 134 points. Eastern Wayne, which saw its five-year reign as county champ end, couldn't overcome crucial injuries and scored 89 points along with Southern Wayne. Goldsboro (41 points) and Spring Creek (34) completed the six-team field.
"We're just a bunch of Dalmatians with no spots ... yet," CBA head coach Roger Rhodes said. "They went over there with intentions and did everything to the best of their ability. I'm proud of every single one of them whether they finished first or they finished last.
"We can finally say we're the county team champion."
Aycock teammates Emily Martin and Jade Creel recorded the same height -- 4 feet, 8 inches -- in the high jump, but Martin took the county championship since she took less attempts to clear the bar. Creel was the runner-up.
Kennedy Perkins crossed the line first in the 1,600-meter run in 6 minutes, 46 seconds. Katie Johnson was the 800-meter champ in 2:55.
"Those girls did this part of the county proud," beamed Rogers.
Hamilton, a junior, had promised Southern Wayne head coach Takisha Vann that she'd wear pigtails during the county meet. As her locks flowed in the wind, Hamilton ran a personal-best time of 11.99 seconds in the 100 dash and she came back later in the day to win the 200 dash.
"I'm not sure I like them, but they gave me good luck," laughed Hamilton. "I'm pretty excited (about the 100). I wanted to cry, but I was just too happy (about the PR). I have been working on staying fast the whole race and not burn out after about 50 meters like I have been doing."
Is she keeping the pigtails?
"I'm not sure," Hamilton said.
Vann had her own opinion.
"She's gonna wear them the rest of the year," Vann said.
Warriors head coach Marvin Bowman scratched several competitors before the 4-hour event got underway. The other teams benefited from those absences, especially in the sprints. Tameeka Williford won the 400 run, while EW grabbed the 800- and 3,200-meter relays.
Rosewood's Alysse Atwell took first place in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Anna Ingram and Brynna Lee won the shot put and pole vault, respectively.
Goldsboro's Grayson Collins claimed the 3,200.
