South Brunswick pins Eagles

A little tough love.

And maybe a lesson learned.

South Brunswick emerged victorious in five of the first six contested matches and rolled to a 54-28, non-conference decision over Rosewood on the wrestling mat Thursday evening.

The loss snapped the Eagles' five-match win streak.

"We schedule tough teams to make us better, to keep us grounded and to expose our weaknesses so that we can get better as a team from top to bottom," said Eagles head coach Bill Edmundson. "South Brunswick gave us a good, old-fashioned whipping. There was nothing pretty about it. There were a few positives that came out of it, but more than anything it was a chance to drive home some of the points we have been making at practice about improvement issues.

"We knew this was going to be a tough match."

Rosewood (6-2 overall) missed three grapplers due to weight issues.

And the five returning starters that helped fill 13 of 14 classes did their best to make the overall outcome respectable. Nick Quillen, a state runner-up last season, drew a disappointing forfeit at 126 pounds. Quadre Hines (152 pounds), Taylor McGill (198) and 113-pounder Angel Jaramillo each earned an individual victory.

Kaleb Smith received a forfeit at 182.

"I thought Angel wrestled real well," said Edmundson. "He's kind of fun to watch, gets real emotional about stuff ... gets fired up real easy. I hate that Nick didn't get a chance to wrestle. I thought Taylor was outstanding.

"Quadre has more energy than he had last year. He's come a long way."

South Brunswick (3-1) collected the initial takedown in six contested bouts and scored the first point in seven matches overall. The Cougars triumphed in four of six matches that went into either the second or third period.

The Eagles yielded eight pins.

"When you wrestle somebody as good and experienced as those guys are, you either work harder to get better or you quit because you're tired of getting beat," said Edmundson.

The teams meet again Jan. 4 at Southport.
