Southern Vance 14,

Southern Wayne 7

* HENDERSON -- Chris Henderson collected the game-winning, 58-touchdown run in the fourth quarter as Southern Vance nipped Southern Wayne, 14-7, in their opening-round game in the 2011 N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A playoffs Friday evening.

Andrew Matthews scored the Saints' lone touchdown in the second quarter, and finished the game with 32 yards rushing on seven carries. Willie Sutton paced the visitors' ground attack with 85 yards on 13 attempts.

Quintae Bradshaw (42 yards), Tyshawn Vann (32 yards) and Jamie Dove (16 yards) also contributed to the offense.

"We were inside the red zone three times, but could not get in the end zone," said Saints head coach David Lee. "They made just one big play and we did not have the big play that we needed. I am very proud of our players for the hard work and dedication that they have brought to the team this year.

"We will definitely miss the seniors."

The Saints concluded the year 6-5 overall.

Southeast Halifax 35,

Rosewood 20

* HALIFAX -- Rosewood's season came to a close with a 35-20 loss at Southeast Halifax on Friday night in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state playoffs.

Shane Whitley and Jay Sellers each scored rushing touchdowns for the Eagles. Jamari McGown caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Taylor McGill.

Rosewood finished the season with a record of 5-6.

Northside 50,

Greene Central 0

* JACKSONVILLE -- Greene Central fell behind 24-0 after the first quarter and endured a 50-0 loss at No. 5-ranked Jacksonville Northside in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state playoffs.

Northside scored three touchdowns in roughly seven minutes in the first quarter and the lead swelled to 50-0 at halftime. Five of the Monarchs' seven touchdowns came on plays of 19 yards or more.

Tray Hill led the Rams (5-6 overall) with 87 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Lejeune 43,

North Duplin 42

* CAMP LEJEUNE -- North Duplin squandered a 27-0 lead and fumbled on its final possession of the game in a 43-42 loss on Friday night at Lejeune in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state playoffs.

The Rebels lost twice to the Devilpups this season by a combined four points. North Duplin senior tailback Devin Oliver left the game in the first half with a groin injury and did not return.

Lejeune (7-5 overall) pulled to within 42-41 on tailback Akile Jones' 4-yard touchdown run with 81 seconds left. The Devilpups elected to attempt a two-point conversion and took the lead on quarterback Gaven Allen's run.

The Rebels fumbled on the Lejeune 42-yard line on their final offensive possession. Fullback Julio Mora led North Duplin with 187 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Oliver contributed 83 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries in his final high school game.

North Duplin finished the season 6-5 overall.

Princeton 21, Union 16

* CLINTON -- Princeton advanced to the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs with a 21-16 win over Union on Saturday.

The game began Friday night, but was suspended due to weather. The teams reconvened on Saturday afternoon and the Dawgs' held on to an early 9-0 lead.

When the game resumed Brad Williamson hit Forest Stewart on a 20-yard touchdown pass thatt made the score 15-0.

"That was a big drive for us getting back into the game," Princeton head coach Russell Williamson said. "Getting a touchdown there got our guys settled down."

Union battled back to get within 21-16 in the final two minutes but an onside kick attempt was thwarted by an illegal substitution penalty.

Princeton (4-7 overall) will travel to Albermarle (11-0) on Nov.11.
