Boys' soccer

Tanner, Neal recognized

* WILSON -- Wayne Country Day senior Hil Tanner and junior Cody Neal earned spots on the 2011 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A all-state boys' soccer squad.

Tanner emerged the area's leading scorer with 69 points -- 31 goals and seven assists. Neal contributed seven goals and 16 assists for a total of 30 points.

Tanner, Neal, Thomas Kierski and Douglas Williams received all-Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference recognition. Trent Proimos was a CPIC honorable mention selection.

The Chargers concluded the year 8-7-3 overall and advanced to NCISAA playoffs.

Cross country

Princeton boys, girls advance

* BURGAW -- The Princeton boys and girls each placed fourth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A Mideast Regional team title chase, and qualified for the season-ending state championship meet in Kernersville.

Ethan Anderson emerged the boys' top finisher with a 21st-place time of 19 minutes, 39.51 seconds. Teammates Quinn Dougherty (23rd), Matt Edwards (26th), Will Toler (27th) and Lane Dougherty (28th) completed the Bulldogs' team score of 110 points.

Rosewood senior Nick Britt (6th, 18:30.13) and Spring Creek freshman Allen Coor (7th, 18:41.27) qualified as individuals for the state meet.

"Nick ran an excellent race against a very talented field," said Rosewood head coach David Younts. "He finished sixth for the second straight year against better competition. We'll go up to Kernersville next weekend for states, and try to close his career out with a PR (personal record) and his highest-ever finish at the state meet."

On the girls' side, Abby Rubio led Princeton's charge with a 22nd-place effort of 25:07.26. Megan Evans crossed the line 30th, while Katlyn Casey was 32nd overall. Kathryn Hewett and Taylor Smith rounded out the Bulldogs' 116-point outing.

North Duplin's Samantha Wilkins and Genesis Orellano qualified as individuals along with Goldsboro's pair of Mikayla Huf and Grayson Collins. Rosewood's Ashley Duran clinched the final qualifying spot with a top-25 time of 25:11.72.

"Ashley ran her fastest time of the year and is peaking at the right moment," said Younts.

N.C. School of Science and Math swept the team titles.

Chargers, Eagles compete

* CHARLOTTE -- Wayne Country Day placed ninth in the team competition during the season-ending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A boys' state championship meet.

Sophomore Robert Glass led the Chargers with a 43rd-place time of 21 minutes, 40.35 seconds. Freshman Warren Jackson took 44th overall in 21:41.88. Teammates Conner Shaw, Jonathan Bryan and Nicholas French rounded out the Chargers' score of 229.

Wayne Christian's Sarah Allen ended up 26th overall in the girls' portion.

Senior Catherine Ford led WCDS with a 31st-place time of 24:32.98. Teammates Emily Warren (25:18.02), Lisa Peacock (26:14.71) and Ami Hodges (30:02.01) also competed.

Tough day for 3-A teams

* WILSON -- Eastern Wayne senior Warren Kirkwood emerged the top runner among Wayne County competitors in the season-ending NCHSAA Class 3-A East Regional meet contested at the Gillette Soccer Complex.

Kirkwood placed 42nd with a time of 18 minutes, 32 seconds.

Sophomore Timmy Cooper ran the 3.1-mile course in 20:08, while fellow Warriors Darian Applewhite and Eric Lemmon also competed.

Charles B. Aycock senior Austin Walker took 55th overall in 19:04. Junior Marvin Alexander, junior Ryan Grant, senior Blake Sutton and freshman Charles Robertson rounded out the Golden Falcons' team score of 454.

Chris Thaxton led North Lenoir with a top-100 time of 20:10.

More than 140 runners participated in the event.

Eastern Wayne's Cristella Rochelle placed the highest among Wayne County runners during the girls' portion of the meet. The sophomore crossed the line in 23:03, which was good enough for 47th. Teammate Ashley Aimes, a freshman, finished 49th in 23:11.

Morgan Exum and Trisha Malcolm also ran for Eastern Wayne.

Sophomore Cady Sheeks and junior Chloee Lamb ended up 67th and 68th, respectively, for the Golden Falcons. Freshmen Gracie Parrott and Ariel Strickland took 69th and 71st, respectively.

Myra Waheed claimed 83rd overall, and rounded out the team's 12th-place showing with 321 points.

Girls' tennis

Local players eliminated early

* BURLINGTON -- Charles B. Aycock and Eastern Wayne took opening-round exits in the 2011 N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A individual state championships.

The Golden Falcons' tandems of Brooke Barfield-Ashton Walker and Katie Gurley-Misty Edwards each endured a season-ending, straight-set loss. It was Edwards' final match of her high school career.

"The competition up there is another level, it really is and we did the best we could do," said Aycock head coach Brad Matthews. "It's the best of the best. I was proud of the way my girls played. They've had an awesome year and they should be proud of themselves.

"They have accomplished a lot."

Aycock finished 22-2 overall in dual-team competition and won its first Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference championship since 2006. Barfield-Walker won the ECC doubles crown.

The Warriors' Grace Delbridge and Savannah Sutton ran into stern competition as well. Delbridge lost to Rockingham County's Caroline Lindsey, while Sutton suffered a 7-5, 6-3 defeat against Western Alamance's Claire Dockrill.

Delbridge concluded the season 17-9 overall in singles play, while Sutton logged a 20-7 worksheet.

Volleyball

Eagles reach Elite Eight

* DURHAM -- Jessica Swets cranked out a team-high 19 kills and served three aces in Wayne Christian's season-ending loss to Cresset Christian in the 2011 NCISAA 1-A volleyball playoffs.

All-state selection Britney O'Hara supplied a double-double (17 kills, 17 digs) in the Eagles' 25-19, 25-20, 14-25, 23-25, 7-15 loss. Haley Greenwood contributed 15 digs and two aces. Junior Katie Caviness recorded two kills and three blocks.

Katie Isenhower dished out 35 assists.

O'Hara also earned a spot on the all-Carolina Christian 1-A Conference team. Swets, Greenwood and Isenhower were all-CCC honorable mention picks.

Wayne Christian concluded the year 18-7 overall.

Middle schools

* Football: Mount Olive 42, Brogden 0 -- Carter Jones rushed for a touchdown and threw a 30-yard scoring pass to Zachary Buff. Quentin Carlton, Travis Chavious and Cole Barwick each rushed for a touchdown. Khalil Fulwood returned an interception for a TD. Fullwood, Zachary Price and Chris Stukes emerged the defensive leaders. Mount Olive concludes regular season play Tuesday at Greenwood.
