Volleyball
Dixon 3, Goldsboro 0
* HOLLY RIDGE -- Goldsboro had its season come to a close with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-14 loss in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1-A state playoffs on Saturday afternoon at Dixon.
Brandy Johnson recorded four kills and three aces for the Cougars. Kasheika Wallace had three blocks and Yusely Lares handed out four assists.
Goldsboro finished the season 9-14.
Epiphany 3, Wayne Country Day 2
* WILSON -- Sarah Crooks cranked out a triple-7 in service aces, kills and digs, but the numbers weren't lucky enough in Wayne Country Day's five-set loss to Epiphany in the opening round of the 2011 Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference tournament Friday afternoon.
Brooke Neal posted team highs of nine kills and 12 digs in an 18-25, 28-26, 19-25, 25-20, 11-15 loss to the Lions at Greenfield School. Bailee Creger contributed three aces, one kill, seven digs and two assists.
Jessica Zhou provided two aces, four kills, three digs and four assists.
Crooks and Zhou earned all-CPIC honors, while Neal grabbed a spot on the all-CPIC honorable mention team. Chargers head coach Juliet Jones and Epiphany's Darryl Radford shared CPIC coach-of-the-year accolades.
WCDS concluded the year 6-16.
Boys' soccer
Hickory Christian 2, Wayne Country Day 0
* HICKORY -- Short-handed Wayne Country Day dropped a 2-0 decision to Hickory Christian Academy in opening-round play of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs Friday afternoon.
The 12th-seeded Chargers competed without three defensive starters. WCDS head coach Scott Summers moved Cody Neal and Jack Langston into the back, which took away distribution from the center midfield area.
It was the final game for three WCDS seniors -- Hil Tanner, Trent Proimos and Doug Williams. The Chargers concluded the season 8-7-3 overall.
JV sports
* Volleyball: Wayne Country Day d. Oakwood 17-25, 25-19, 25-21 -- The Chargers claimed the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference tournament championship. Taylor Sledge, the tournament MVP, served three aces, one kill and dished out two assists. All-CPIC tournament pick Stephanie Schappell contributed one ace and three digs deensively. Olivia Dively (one ace, one kill) and Tiffany Larsen (one ace) contributed to the title-clinching win. Logan Harrell earned a spot on the All-CPIC tournament squad.
* Volleyball: Wayne Country Day d. Freedom Christian 9-25, 25-19, 25-16 -- Taylor Sledge provided three aces, three kills and one assist in the opening round of the CPIC tournament contested at Greenfield School in Wilson. Logan Harrell logged two aces and one dig. Olivia Dively (four aces), Stephanie Schappell (one ace, one kill) and Tiffany Larsen (one ace) helped spearhead the Chargers' comeback.
Middle schools
* Football: Grantham 16, Mount Olive 14 -- Grantham (5-1) claimed the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II championship with a 3-0 worksheet. James Leonard scored two touchdowns and added a two-point conversion for the Bulldogs. Emmanuel Walker picked off a Mount Olive pass and collected a two-point conversion. Ryan Saylor recovered a fumble. Quintin Carlton (two-point conversion) and Zach Buff accounted for Mount Olive's touchdowns. Grantham continues play Thursday at Rosewood.
