Boys' tennis
N.C. School Science & Math 6,
Rosewood 3
* DURHAM -- The N.C. School of Science and Math swept the doubles courts and defeated Rosewood, 6-3, in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A eastern regional, dual-team championship match Thursday afternoon.
Fourth-seeded Zach Behrend, fifth-seeded Daniel Elawar and sixth-seeded Fuad Ismail each triumphed in singles play for the Eagles.
In doubles, Cole Radcliff-Ismail suffered a tough 10-7 loss, while Behrend-Elawar lost in a tiebreaker 11-10 (7).
Rosewood concluded the year 16-2 overall.
Cardinal Gibbons 6, Eastern Wayne 0
* RALEIGH -- East runner-up ... again.
Cardinal Gibbons won three singles matches in shutout fashion and handed Eastern Wayne a season-ending, 6-0 loss in the NCHSAA Class 3-A eastern, dual-team regional final Thursday afternoon.
The Warriors (14-4 overall) made their first appearance in a regional championship since 2007, and third overall in program history. They have lost all three.
"Our guys competed well today against a very strong team," said Eastern Wayne head coach Craig Hassell. "It was a great experience for these young men. They worked hard all year to get to this point and realize what it takes to compete at the highest level of 3-A high school tennis in North Carolina.
"Each player improved as the season progressed and it was truly a team effort."
Chaz Fitzpatrick dropped an opening-set tiebreaker to Gibbons' Mike Daly at the No. 1 slot. Daly prevailed 7-6 (3), 6-0.
It was the final match for seniors Mike Barnette and Joseph Chaney, who will graduate next month. Rafael Guerra will return to Spain, but Hassell is expected to return five players next season.
Golf
Costner logs ace at GMGC
* Richard Costner recorded the fourth hole-in-one of his career Wednesday at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. He used a 6-iron to hole out at No. 12.
Robert Shepherd witnessed the feat.
Walnut Creek Ladies Association
* Kathy Woodard and Hiromi Sueki seized second gross and first net, respectively, during first flight competition in the seventh annual Walnut Creek Ladies Golf Association Invitational.
Faye Franklin took first net in second flight, while Charlotte Campbell won third net in third-flight action. Mary Morris and Evelyn Rose captured first net and third net, respectively, in fourth flight play.
Joyce Reynolds secured second net in fifth flight. Meanwhile, Betty Holloway (first net) and Penny Ritt (third net) emerged with strong outings in sixth flight.
More than 80 participants from eastern North Carolina played in the event.
In regular weekly play, Sueki was the low gross winner in first flight. Franklin and Gaye Bryant took low net and low putts, respectively, in first flight, also.
Second-flight winners were Holloway (low gross), Reynolds (low net) and Ritt (low putts).
College track
Ash completes freshman season
* GREENSBORO -- Freshman Brandon Ash, a Rosewood alum, participated in the 100- and 200-meter dashes for Guilford College this spring.
A 5-foot-8 sprinter, Ash ran personal bests in both events during the VertKlasse Meet on April 17. He ran a 12.8 in the 100 and broke the tape in 26.31 seconds in the 200.
Guilford finished fourth as a team in the season-ending, Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships in Salem, Va. Ash is one 23 starters expected to return next season.
