Southern Wayne rolls over C.B. Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Bob Warren never doubted his team's ability.

He just had to get his young players to believe in themselves.

Suddenly full of confidence, Southern Wayne has the look of a dangerous team. The Saints rushed for 385 yards in a 49-18 rout of county rival Charles B. Aycock on Friday night at Hardy Talton Stadium.

It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

The Saints' offensive line dominated the Golden Falcons all night. Southern Wayne forced Aycock to punt on the game's first possession. The Saints then embarked on an 11-play drive that ended in JaQuan Cobb's 3-yard touchdown run.

Andrew Matthews' 15-yard yard score put Southern Wayne in front 14-0 late in the first quarter.

"When you get blocking ahead of you and get up into the holes and have a little bit of running room, then you can do what you do best," said Saints' head coach Bob Warren. "We've got some very good runners. I give credit to the line and the backs for getting up in the holes and doing what they do best."

Aycock offensive lineman Austin Willoughby recovered quarterback Tyler Farmer's fumble in the end zone for a touchdown early in the second quarter. The extra point was no good and the Golden Falcons trailed 14-6.

Cobb's 2-yard score midway through the second quarter extended the lead to 21-6. The senior fullback finished with 131 yards on 19 carries. Matthews contributed 92 yards on five carries.

Southern Wayne (5-6 overall, 3-2 ECC) scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter. Devondre Johnson's 35-yard touchdown run increased the margin to 28-6. Matthews added a 74-yard score and Tyshawn Vann had a 7-yard touchdown run. The Saints outgained Aycock 434-297 in total offense.

"Tonight was a reflection of a team with very little left to play for," said Golden Falcons' head coach Randy Pinkowski. "We're beat up. We just didn't have anything for them. They took it to us and we put up very little resistance. I told my kids the thing I want them to leave here with is the discipline and commitment it takes to play football and use that down the road."

Quintin Smith's 64-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter capped Southern Wayne's scoring. The Saints earned wins over county foes Goldsboro, Eastern Wayne and Aycock (3-8, 1-4) this season.

"The big with this group is they're starting to believe," said Warren. "A lot of these things we've been throwing at them they're starting to put to use. We're real happy for the kids. They're finding out that hard work pays off."

Marquis Bryant scored on a 12-yard touchdown run and Farmer tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Austin Snowden as time expired. Bryant rushed for a team-high 69 yards on 12 carries. Farmer was 8 of 17 passing for 181 yards with two interceptions.
