Girls' tennis
W. Country Day 9, Oakwood 0
* GREENVILLE -- Wayne Country Day swept the singles and doubles in a shutout victory over Oakwood on the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference scene Wednesday afternoon.
Sarah Best remained unbeaten against CPIC opposition with a straight-set triumph in singles, and a 8-2 win with Mack Thompson at No. 1 doubles. Thompson, Katherine and Meredith Roethling, Monica Beuhausen and Mollie Catherine McDonald also prevailed in singles.
K. Roethling-Madison Bryan and M. Roethling-McDonald each earned a doubles point.
The Chargers (9-3 overall, 3-1 CPIC) travel to Greenfield today.
Girls' golf
Aycock finishes second
* WILSON -- C.B. Aycock fired a team total of 271 which was good enough for second place in a four-team match at Willow Springs on Wednesday afternoon.
Wilson Fike won the team event with a 267 total. Mallory Warrick claimed individual medalist honors with an 18-hole score of 70.
Tara Simmons paced the Golden Falcons with a 74. Jesse Stewart (95) and Jordyn Howell (102) rounded out the team score for C.B. Aycock.
The Golden Falcons will take a break until the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A eastern regional on Oct. 25 at Birchwood Country Club.
Boys' soccer
Ayden-Grifton 6, Goldsboro 3
* Bryan Johnson tallied a goal and an assist, but it was not enough to get Goldsboro its' first win on the Carolina 1-A Conference soccer scene on Thursday night.
The Cougars fell 6-3 to Ayden-Grifton.
Jeff Martinez scored twice for Goldsboro. Alan Odom picked up one assist.
Goldsboro entertains Rosewood on Monday.
Volleyball
Greene Central 3, Kinston 2
* SNOW HILL -- The Rams celebrated senior night with a 25-17, 21-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-9 win over Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival Kinston.
Kortney McQueen finished with six kills and two blocks for Greene Central. Meagan Letchworth added five kills and Paige Chase dished out 22 assists.
Greene Central opens play in the EPC tournament on Monday against an undetermined opponent.
Cross country
Warriors sweep ECC meet
* CLAYTON -- Warren Kirkwood and Heather Black finished second in their respective divisions, and Eastern Wayne swept a four-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet hosted by Cleveland High School.
Kirkwood covered the 5K course in 19 minutes, 10 seconds as the Warriors edged Cleveland 36-44 in team competition. C.B. Aycock ended up third at 102, followed by North Lenoir (106).
Nolan Kirkwood (20:02), Michael Pinkston (20:21), Denzel Benjamin (20:41) and Timmy Cooper (20:47) rounded out Eastern Wayne's scoring.
Black turned in a 23:55 for the Warriors, who bested county foe Aycock 25-42 in the team race. North Lenoir collected 53 points and Cleveland didn't field enough runners to post a team score.
Kristella Rochell (24:09), Morgan Exum (24:19), Kristen Larsen (24:21) and Ashley Jarrett (28:23) contributed to the Warriors' victory.
JV sports
* Eastern Wayne 4, C.B. Aycock 2 -- Mitchell Caspar notched two goals for the Warriors, who picked up their first win of the season. Joey Henry and Deonte Davis collected one goal apiece. Addison Vail scored for Aycock, which benefited from a second-half "own" goal. The Warriors improved to 1-8-0 overall, while the Golden Falcons dropped to 7-2-1.
Middle schools
* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Grantham 25-22, 25-23, 13-25, 25-12 -- Jordan Dubose led the Eagles with eight aces. Callie Thornton contributed six kills in the win. Rosewood improved to 8-1 overall.
* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Greenwood 25-15, 25-23, 25-23 -- The Cobras improved to 8-0 on the season. Norwayne will host Dillard today.
Neuse River
Youth Football League
* 12-Under: Eastern Wayne 7, Boys & Girls Club 0 -- Lee Daniels rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown, threw for another 57 yards and collected the lone extra point for the Wee Warriors. Jacob Magera had 51 receiving yards. Isiah Hatchett and Jayden Bauer rushed for 81 and 64 yards, respectively. Keyshawn Johnson emerged Eastern Wayne's defensive leader with nine tackles. Collin Nix recorded six tackles, while Magera had four stops. Aaron Smith Jr. posted three tackles. Daniels picked off a Boys & Girls pass.
