ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne County South saw its offense erupt in a 16-5 Junior American Legion win in five innings at Rocky Mount on Thursday night.
Taylor Gainey (two doubles, three RBI) and Josh Crawford (three RBI) collected three hits apiece. Will Raynor added a home run, a double and an RBI. Ashton Cox supplied two hits and an RBI. Jaime Dove also had a hit.
Jamar Holmes recorded the win on the mound, surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Jackson Hayes allowed three runs (one earned) in an inning of relief.
Wayne South (11-2 overall) entertains North Lenoir tonight.
Basketball
Cahill heads to St. Andrews
WILSON -- Goldsboro native Darian Cahill, the son of Crystal and Jay Cahill, has signed a national letter-of-intent to continue his basketball career at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.
Cahill played his prep basketball at Greenfield and helped the Knights capture the regular-season and tournament titles in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play. Greenfield lost in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A championship game.
St. Andrews finished 7-20 this past season, including a 3-17 worksheet against NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas opposition.
Cahill has not selected a major.
