PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock erupted for 14 runs in the first two innings and routed Wilson Fike 16-1 in 41/2 innings on Thursday afternoon.

Torie Benton paced the Golden Falcons with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate including a home run, a triple, four RBI and four runs scored. Autumn Pittman added a pair of hits, including a home run and four RBI.

Rachel Jordan had two hits, a home run and two RBI. Brooke Bell turned in two hits, an RBI and three runs scored.

Pittman picked mound win, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and no walks in three innings of work.

The Golden Falcons (2-0 overall) visit South Central today at 5 p.m.

Saints earn road win

SNOW HILL -- Lauren Darden struck out 12 batters and belted a two-run home run as Southern Wayne knocked off Greene Central 5-1 on Thursday afternoon.

Christina Williams and Morgan Davis each contributed an RBI for the Saints. Tara Hirsch added a hit and a pair of runs scored. Madison Davis tacked on a hit for Southern Wayne.

The Saints (2-0 overall) entertain Greene Central on Tuesday.

Rebels fall

CLINTON -- Youth-laden North Duplin began its season with a 13-2 loss at Union on Thursday afternoon.

The Rebels were plagued by six errors. Ansley Hill logged four strikeouts and three walks in four innings of work on the mound. The Spartans parlayed the walks, errors and seven hits into 13 runs.

Skylar McCarty led North Duplin offensively with two hits and a pair of RBI. Hill added a hit.

The Rebels (0-1 overall) play host to today.

Warriors blanked

MOREHEAD CITY -- West Carteret handed Eastern Wayne a 3-0, non-conference loss on Thursday afternoon.

Lisa Hollingsworth took the pitching loss for the Warriors. She yielded three runs (one earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Casey Mitchell finished with a pair of hits for Eastern Wayne. Lindsey Frederick and Jessica Ream each added a hit.

The Warriors (1-1 overall) welcome Jones Senior at 4:30 p.m. today.

Baseball

Union downs ND

CLINTON -- Union pushed across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for a 5-4, non-conference win over North Duplin on Thursday.

Marcus Kornegay and James Kornegay each tallied a pair of hits for the Rebels. Joseph King tacked on a hit.

Brian Chase got the start on the mound for North Duplin and allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits. He posted seven strikeouts and two walks over five innings.

The Rebels (0-1 overall) play host to Union at 4:30 p.m. today.

Rams down Chargers

SNOW HILL -- Jasper Jones allowed just one run over four innings as Greene Central earned a 3-1 win over visiting Ayden-Grifton on Thursday afternoon.

Jones surrendered just two hits over four innings to go along with four strikeouts and one walk. The Rams hurler also had a pair of hits at the plate and Alex Brann added a double.

Wes Sowers recorded the save while working a scoreless inning of relief.

Greene Central (1-0 overall) visits Southern Wayne at 4:30 p.m. today.

Boys' tennis

Warriors chase Demons

Eastern Wayne collected a 6-1, non-conference victory over visiting Wilson Fike on Thursday afternoon.

Aaron Dunmire, Eric Barnes, Mike Barnette, Marcos Machado and Joseph DiCesare each earned singles victories for the Warriors.

The doubles Russell Turner-Dunmire, Barnes-Barnette and Machado-DiCesare were also winners for Eastern Wayne. The final two doubles matches were suspended due to darkness.

Dan Price recorded an exhibition singles win for Eastern Wayne.

The Warriors (2-0 overall) face North Lenoir at 4 p.m. on Monday at Bill Faye Park in Kinston.

GC wins two

Greene Central began its season with a pair of victories over Rosewood and Edenton Holmes.

The Rams defeated visiting Rosewood 9-0 on Thursday.

Eric Simmons, Colby Chase, Andrew Harrison, Jason Perry, Hunter Thigpen and Dillon Lee each collected singles victories for Greene Central. The doubles teams of Simmons-Chase, Harrison-Perry and Thigpen-Lee were also winners.

The Rams picked up a 7-2 victory at Edenton Holmes on Wednesday.

Simmons, Chase, Harrison, Thigpen, Lee and Whitson each recorded singles wins. Simmons-Chase and Harrison-Perry were also victorious in doubles play.

Greene Central (2-0 overall) visits Rosewood on Tuesday.

JV sports

* Baseball: Greene Central 13, Ayden-Grifton 8 -- C.J. Faulkner turned in a 3-for-3 performance at the plate for the Rams including a home run. Kyle McLawhorn went 2-for-3 with a triple and Ryan Cobb added a pair of hits including a home run. Cobb also picked up the win on the mound. Greene Central (1-0 overall) entertains Southern Wayne today.

Middle schools

* Baseball: Norwayne 12, Grantham 2 -- Hunter Jones, Jordan Lee and Taylor Phillips each collected two hits for Norwayne. Adam Pate recorded the win on the mound. Norwayne (1-0) hosts Dillard on Monday.

* Baseball: Spring Creek 14, Greenwood 8 -- Anthony Russo, Matt Rogers and Zack Whitfield each recorded two hits for the Gators, Wyatt Jenning, James Phipps and Will Daly also added hits. Jenning collected the win on the mound. Spring Creek entertains Grantham on Monday.

* Softball: Greenwood 16, Spring Creek 5 -- Greenwood erupted for 11 runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open a tight ballgame. Abby Sutton recorded five strikeouts on the mound for the Gators and Sarah Casey and Morgan Stancil each had four hits for Spring Creek. The Gators host Grantham on Monday.

* Softball: Eastern Wayne 16, Brogden 1 -- Haley Ginn led the Warriors with three hits including a home run and also earned the win on the mound. Stephanie Smith and Kara Peralta had two hits each. Eastern Wayne (1-0) entertains Greenwood on Monday.
