PRINCETON -- Rosewood emerged victorious in five of eight contested individual matches and turned back archrival Princeton 43-18 on the wrestling mat Monday evening.

The Eagles (18-8 overall) recorded three falls, one decision and one major decision against the short-handed Bulldawgs.

"It is never good to wrestle on Monday, but I'll take the win," said Rosewood coach Bill Edmundson. "You never know what shape or what weight the boys will come in at, but they did a great job maintaining their weight and endurance.

"I thought Jamie Wooten, Cameron Lane and Sammy Ennis wrestled great tonight."

Wooten, who competed at 189 pounds, pinned Princeton's Matt Canada in 53 seconds. Lane needed 70 seconds to pin Bulldawg heavyweight Logan Rains and Ennis scored a tight 9-5 decision over 130-pounder David Waddell.

Rosewood's Zach Behrend moved up to 112 pounds and earned his third win over Matthew Evans this season. Teammates Chris Lane (103), Dillon Guss (140), Joshua Holmes (145) and Aaron Keefer (215) each collected a win.

The trio of Patrick Woodard (152), Zach Stevens (160) and Tyler Baker (171) accounted for most of Princeton's team points. Woodard recorded a first-period pin, while Stevens and Baker each notched a decision.

Drew Malarchick received a forfeit at 125 pounds.

Both teams return to action later this week. Princeton entertains North Johnston on Wednesday, while Rosewood travels to Greene Central on Thursday.

Girls' basketball

Eagles grounded

Wayne Christian could not overcome a slow offensive start and eventually fell 47-34 to Carolina 1-A Christian Conference opponent Cape Fear Christian on Monday night.

The teams battled to a 6-6 tie in the opening six minutes, but Cape Fear pulled away as the first quarter expired. A 7-0 run that spanned five minutes pushed the Eagles into the lead, but the excitement was short-lived.

Cape Fear answered with a 15-4 run and seized a 21-16 halftime advantage.

After an even third period, the visitors pulled away in the fourth quarter. Erica Holmes delivered the knockout punch with three minutes to play as she buried a 3-pointer from the left wing and sealed the win.

Wayne Christian (9-4 overall, 5-3 CCC) was led by Julia Oden's 14-point effort off the bench. Kayla Kennedy and Jennifer Price each scored six points. Hanna Kaler pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Cape Fear Christian 35, Wayne Christian 24 -- Gregory Johnson paced the Wayne Christian offense with nine points and five rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles fell to Cape Fear on Monday. Dylan Smith added five points and teammate Baron Wise chipped in four markers and grabbed 10 boards. Tyler Lacerda dished out five assists.

* Boys basketball: Greenwood 48, Spring Creek 29 -- Jaelen Johnson erupted for 15 points and seven rebounds as Greenwood cruised past Spring Creek on Monday. Quavis Holloman added 13 points in the win. Greenwood maintained its undefeated record at 11-0 overall.

* Girls' basketball: Wayne Christian 33, Cape Fear Christian 24 -- Brooke Barfield and Katie Isenhower each scored 10 points respectively for the Eagles as they defeated Cape Fear on Monday. Niki Fitzmorris added eight points and seven rebounds.

* Girls' basketball: Eastern Wayne 42, Dillard 32 -- Divonnie Powell led all scorers with 15 points to lead Eastern Wayne to victory. Elondia Grant poured in nine points and finished with seven steals. Rajuana Boyette scored five points and grabbed six rebounds in the win.

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 28, Greenwood 23 -- The Cobras outscored the T-birds 5-0 in overtime to capture the victory. Jenna Van Horn paced the Norwayne offense with eight points. Quanica Artis added six points for the Cobras. The T-birds were led by Brandy Johnson's nine-point effort.

* Girls' basketball: Grantham 22, Brogden 14 -- Keaten Bradley scored 10 points to lead the Bulldogs as they captured their second win of the season. Ebony Robinson led the Greenwood attack with eight points.

* Girls' basketball: Rosewood 39, Mount Olive 16 -- Logan Bill led all scorers with 14 points as Rosewood improved to 7-4 overall. Amanda Becker added seven points and Danielle Cornman chipped in six markers in the win. Timia Dortch scored eight points for Mount Olive.
