"We were running with three of our top seven runners not available," said Eastern Wayne coach Sidney Myers. "Caleb, Cole and Steven were really challenged before the race to step up. They all did a really great job of moving up through the field and holding on to their places in the last 400 meters."

On the girls' side, Eastern Wayne took five of top six spots.

Leanna Kirkland grabbed second in 21:58, nearly half a minute behnd meet winner Maria Williams of Hunt. Kelly Gregorcyk (third), Heather Black (fourth), Sarah Ricker (fifth) and Morgan Jeffreys (sixth) helped account for Eastern Wayne's 20-49 rout of Hunt.

The Bruins logged 70 points.

"I am so proud of these girls. They just continue to amaze me," said Eastern Wayne coach Jan Metzler. "They work so well together supporting each other mentally and physically. They consider strategy and run smart, and it pays off every time."

Saints booted

KINSTON -- Jesus Rodriguez tallied two second-half goals, but Southern Wayne dropped a 5-2 decision to Kinston in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Evan Price scored twice for the Vikings. Landon DeBruhl, Cole Kratzer and Drew Barker supplied one goal apiece.

The Saints (3-8 overall, 2-5 ECC) visit Wilson Beddingfield today.

Golf

Walnut Creek LGA

Nancy Satterfield claimed play-of-the-day honors during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Jewel Ivey had first low gross and Mary Ann Sutton claimed first low net in first flight play. In second flight, Linda Cannon took first low gross, while Mary Morris won first low net.

Faye Franklin and Novella Zambelli shared low putts.

JV sports

* Football: Southern Wayne 27, Eastern Wayne 19 -- Ryan Jones emerged the Warriors' top rusher with 157 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams. Daquan Daze finished with two receptions for 40 yards and a TD. Greg Simms paced the defense with nine tackles. Jaquan Cobbs led the Saints with 157 yards rushing and three touchdowns on runs of 20, 22 and 7 yards. Tobias Flow hauled in an 8-yard touchdown reception from Quenton Smith. Quintay Bradshaw added 90 yards rushing. Defensively, Dominique Ford had six tackles for Southern Wayne. Flow posted two sacks, while Bradshaw delivered one sack. Eastern Wayne (1-4 overall, 0-1 Eastern Carolina 3-A) plays host to Wilson Hunt next Thursday, while Southern Wayne (4-2, 1-0 ECC) welcomes Wilson Beddingfield.

Middle schools

* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Dillard 25-13, 25-13, 25-18 -- Norwayne was led by Chloe Smith with 10 points on serve. The Cobras improved to 9-0 overall.

* Football: Brogden 40, Spring Creek 6 -- Ravell Outlaw accounted for three touchdowns on offense. On defense, he had an interception, fumble recovery and eight tackles. Deonta Hayes and Tyree Manley also scored touchdowns. Hayes had six stops on defense, while Manley had five. Outlaw, Hayes, Akil Moore, Toiquann Newkirk and Jamaal George each tallied a two-point conversion. Brogden (3-2 overall) is 2-0 in Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference play.

Youth sports

* Football: Spring Creek 8U d. Rosewood 24-0 -- Jessie Casper scored three touchdowns, including a 25-yard quarterback keeper for the Gators. Michael Russo followed pancake blocks by Darden Bynum, Donte Burch and Jalen Staps into the end zone. Spring Creek plays the Boys Club on Monday.
