KINSTON -- Nick Bowden delivered the game-winning goal in the 76th minute as Eastern Wayne escaped Kinston 3-2 on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference boys' soccer scene Monday.

Bowden scored off Richard Riddle's assist.

The Warriors raced to a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes. Bowden converted a direct free kick from 25 yards out and Riddle connected on a penalty kick.

Kinston rallied for a 2-2 tie on back-to-back goals from Evan Price in the 28th and 33rd minutes.

Eastern Wayne owned a 9-7 edge in shots and 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Warriors (3-5 overall) improved to 3-2 in the ECC heading into Wednesday's game at Southern Wayne.

The Vikings (1-6-5) fell to 1-3-1 in the league.

Chargers blanked

State-ranked Kerr-Vance Academy fired just eight shots on goal and knocked off Wayne Country Day 3-0 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

The Spartans, ranked No. 3 in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association poll, tallied goals in the 34th, 60th and 65th minutes.

"The best way I can describe this match is that it was a respectable improvement, but an ultimate disappointment," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "We lost to Kerr-Vance 5-1 last time around, and so this was 'better.'"

Heinemann described his team's play as "valiant," but lamented that just one sub compared to Kerr-Vance's 11 factored into the outcome. The Chargers (6-12-1, 2-5 CPIC) slowly faded in the final eight minutes of the opening half, and the Spartans controlled possession in the second half.

"They maintained most of the possession, passed the ball well and put us on our heels for just about all of the half," said Heinemann. "We couldn't hold them."

Wayne Country Day visits No. 2-ranked Faith Christian-Rocky Mount today and visits Ahoskie Ridgecroft on Friday.

Tennis

Rams down CBA

SNOW HILL -- State-ranked Greene Central swept the doubles matches and turned back Charles B. Aycock 6-3 on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts Monday afternoon.

The Rams (14-3 overall) earned doubles points from Jessica Gray-Abbey Dail, Lauren Carraway-Elizabeth McLawhorn and Samantha Taylor-Abby Sugg. McLawhorn, Taylor and Sugg each claimed a singles point.

Aycock (8-5) picked up singles points from Kristen Fischer, Abbey Strickland and Harlie Howard.

"Aycock has improved tremendously since the first week of the season when we played," said Greene Central head coach Donald Clark. "Their girls played very smart in singles."

Warriors cruise

Defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference champion Eastern Wayne cruised past Wilson Beddingfield 9-0 on Monday afternoon.

Danielle Daniel, Lindsey Frederick, Mollie Musgrave, Elizabeth Borden, Kelsi Yates and Miller Delbridge each earned a singles point for the Warriors.

The teams of Emily Northington-Borden, Frederick-Musgrave and Daniel-Yates each prevailed in doubles play.

Eastern Wayne travels to C.B. Aycock today.

Volleyball

Hawks prevail

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir completed its regular-season sweep of Southern Wayne 25-17, 25-13, 25-14 on Monday evening at Wooten Gymnasium.

Jordan Hudson led the Hawks' attack with 26 points on serve and 16 assists. Kristen Davenport recorded six kills. Heidi Milliken contributed five digs.

North Lenoir (17-0 overall) visits Eastern Plains 2-A member Tarboro today. Meanwhile, Southern Wayne plays host to perennial ECC power Wilson Beddingfield.

Falcons grounded

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock never found its stride offensively and fell to Eastern Carolina 3-A Cconference foe Wilson Beddingfield 25-23, 25-20, 25-13 on Monday.

Brittany Jackson delivered 12 kills for the Golden Falcons. Beth Carter added eight kills.

Aycock (5-7 overall, 3-3 ECC) entertains Kinston today.

JV sports

* Football: C.B. Aycock 24, North Lenoir 0 -- Marques Bryant scored two touchdowns and racked up 99 yards rushing as the Golden Falcons offense took flight. Tyler Farmer finished with 75 yards and one touchdown passing. Aycock improved to 3-2 overall.

* Volleyball: North Lenoir d. Southern Wayne 25-14, 25-11 -- Kristen Smith led the Hawks with 14 points on serve.

* Volleyball: C.B. Aycock d. Beddingfield 16-25, 25-17, 26-24 -- Connor Davis led the Golden Falcons with seven kills. Imari Howell added five kills. Charles B. Aycock improved to 8-3 overall.

Middle schools

* Volleyball: Match 1 -- Dillard d. Greenwood 26-24, 25-14 -- Leiza Greenfield tallied 20 points on serve in the win. Shakira Campbell and Jane Hamilton each contributed two kills.

* Volleyball: Match 2 -- Dillard d. Greenwood 25-7, 24-26, 25-17 -- D'Andra Godwin recorded two service aces in the victory. Dillard improved to 3-2 overall. The Tigers will host Spring Creek on Thursday.

* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Eastern Wayne 25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 25-14 -- Regan Herndon and Madison Mercer each delivered 12 points on serve for the Cobras. Norwayne (5-0 overall) will travel to Mount Olive on Thursday.

* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Spring Creek 25-12, 25-11, 25-16 -- Myra Gerrell tallied nine service aces as the Eagles topped the Gators. Scout Anderson chipped in four aces and Holly Heath contributed two kills. Rosewood improved to 4-0 on the season.

* Football: Brogden 22, Mount Olive 6 -- Zach Solice rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns for the Rams. Ronell Outlaw added 75 yards and one score in the win. Julian Mitchell and Deonte Hayes each recorded six solo tackles. Brogden improved to 1-2 overall.
