Wayne Christian cross country takes second

LUMBERTON -- The Wayne Christian cross country teams wound up second overall in the boys' and girls' team portion of the annual Cougar Classic on Saturday.

The Eagle boys, led by Josh Magnus' meet-winning time of 18 minutes, 13 seconds, lost to Fayetteville Christian 20-59. Classic host Flora MacDonald was third with 86 points, followed by Red Springs High School with 103.

On the girls' side, Fayetteville defeated Wayne Christian 20-60.

Justin Brathwaite complemented Magnus with a sixth-place effort of 19:19. Teammates Connor Jones (19:50) and Mark Sawyer (20:58) crossed the line in 11th and 19th place, respectively. Noah Kearney rounded out the scoring in 21st.

Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price claimed her third individual victory of the season with a time of 22:54. Kayla Kennedy was the next highest-scoring Eagle in 10th. Tiffany Price (34:04) and Katie Saltzmann (35:08) ended up 15th and 16th respectively. Katherine Lamaree was 16th in 36:15.

The girls' team scores were adjusted since Flora MacDonald and Red Springs did not have enough runners for the team competition.

Golf

Goldsboro's Simmons takes second

BADIN -- Goldsboro's Tara Simmons finished second in individual play and earned all-state honors during the N.C. Middle School Golf Championships contested at the Badin Inn Resort and Golf Club.

Simmons carded a two-day total of 87 on the par-71 layout. Winston-Salem's Victoria Allred claimed medalist honors with an 82.

The annual junior championship is conducted by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association, a division of the Carolinas Golf Association.
