CBA knocks off E. Wayne

PIKEVILLE -- In volleyball, momentum is always just one play away.

Charles B. Aycock seized late advantages at key moments and defeated defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference champion Eastern Wayne 25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 25-12 on Thursday evening.

But the Golden Falcons had their fare share of trouble.

"We were not very good on serve, and that is a big part of our game," said C.B. Aycock head coach Davis Harris. "It seemed like every game we would tie the game late and have a chance to go ahead.

"But then we would hit it into the net, or we would serve one way long."

Eastern Wayne played strong during its second game. Anna Hajjar dominated the outside and Caitlin Turner notched six points on serve.

Aycock turned the tables in game three.

The Golden Falcons corrected some early problems and were more efficient behind emotional leader Tori Benton. The senior delivered five assists and the final two points on serve as Aycock began to put the gameplan together.

"I think they started to put it together in that third game," said Harris. "That looked more like what these girls are capable of."

Aycock sealed the victory in game five thanks to 10 points on serve from Beth Carter and four kills from Brittany Jackson.

"Beth just took over that last game," said Harris. "She changed speeds with her serves and she placed them in different spots. She came up big for us."

The Golden Falcons (4-6 overall) evened their ECC record at 2-2 and complete first-half conference play Tuesday at Southern Wayne.

"All the matches this time of year are big matches," said Harris. "We need to be ready to play."

The Warriors dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the league. First-year coach Steve Gregorcyk offered no comment on his team's play after the match.
