HENDERSON -- Wayne Country Day defeated perennial volleyball power Kerr-Vance Academy on Tuesday 25-22, 25-19, 13-25, 25-21 and seized sole possession of the Class 1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference lead.

The Chargers claimed their first victory over the Spartans in seven seasons.

"I am ecstatic. I don't even really know what to say," said Chargers head coach Juliet Jones. "The girls played extremely well and right now we are in first place in the conference."

Bridgette Briggs led the WCDS attack with 14 assists and nine kills. Brooke Norris added eight kills and five digs. Kayla Flanagan also recorded five digs.

Wayne Country Day (8-2 overall) puts its four-match win streak on the line at home Thursday against Oakwood.

Hawks roll

BETHEL -- North Lenoir dominated all three games in a 25-7, 25-11, 25-11 victory over Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference foe North Pitt on Tuesday.

Jordan Hudson dished out 25 assists for the Hawks. Kristen Davenport recorded 20 points on serve and Courtney Hill led the North Lenoir attack with seven kills.

The Hawks (12-0 overall, 2-0 EPC) entertain Goldsboro on Thursday.

Cougars defeated

FARMVILLE -- Farmville Central handed Goldsboro a 25-7, 25-16, 25-13 loss in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Tuesday.

Goldsboro is the guest of North Lenoir on Thursday.

Faith falls

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian captured the first two games, but could not maintain the momentum as they fell to Berean Christian 21-25, 20-25, 25-15, 25-22, 17-15 in N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A play Tuesday afternoon.

Rebecca Smith led the Crusaders with 11 assists. Brooke Anderson delivered seven kills and two blocks. Brittany Dell added 10 digs.

Faith Christian (3-2 overall) entertains Falls Road Baptist on Thursday.

Rebels rise

CALYPSO -- North Duplin lost the opening game to Ayden-Grifton but immediately bounced back to 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-21 in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

Sam Cates led the Rebel attack with six kills and three assists. Felicia Lynch served five aces and dished out three assists and Tearra Amons recorded four blocks.

"This was a much better game for us," said North Duplin head coach Heather Best. "I still see things we need to work on, but overall I am pleased with our play."

North Duplin (3-4 overall, 1-2 Carolina) travels to Rosewood on Thursday. All proceeds from that game will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Golden Falcons fall

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock never found its stride and fell to Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Wilson Hunt 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 on Tuesday.

Beth Carter led the Golden Falcons with seven kills. Jessica Hare chipped in six assists.

Aycock (3-6 overall, 1-2 ECC) visits Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

Tennis

Warriors dominate

KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne took less than an hour to dispatch Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Kinston 9-0 on Tuesday.

Danielle Daniel, Lindsey Frederick, Mollie Musgrave, Elizabeth Borden, Miller Delbridge and Kelsi Yates each earned a singles point for Eastern Wayne.

The teams of Frederick-Musgrave, Daniel-Yates and Emily Northington-Borden each won in doubles action.

Eastern Wayne (6-1 overall, 4-0 ECC) is the guest of Southern Wayne on Thursday.

Soccer

Chargers beaten

On a soggy and sloppy pitch, Wayne Country Day dropped a 6-0 decision to Ridgecroft in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Illness and academic troubles left the Chargers one player short for the contest. Second-year coach Baron Heinemann convinced two players to join the team less than two hours before kickoff.

"My boys played up to the final whistle and that's about all I could ask of them," said Heinemann. "The stars just don't seem to be aligning for us."

Ridgecroft's Hayes Joyner scored five of the Rams' six goals.

Wayne Country Day (4-10 overall, 0-3-0 CPIC) entertains Oakwood on Thursday.

JV sports

* Volleyball: North Lenoir d. North Pitt 22-25, 27-25, 25-14 -- Heidi Milliken led the Hawks with 20 service points. Kristen Davenport contributed five kills. The Hawks improved to 6-6 overall.

* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Spring Creek 25-20, 27-25 -- Rachael Kornegay delivered three kills and one assist for the Eagles. Kerri Jo Gurley racked up three aces and led the Rosewood attack from the service line. The Eagles improved to 5-5 overall.

Middle schools

* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Brogden 25-10, 25-14, 25-14 -- It was the season opener for the Eagles. Rosewood (1-0 overall) visits Eastern Wayne Thursday.
