Wayne Christian netters dominate Trinity Christian-Durham

DURHAM -- Wayne Christian swept the singles and doubles, and dominated Trinity Christian-Durham 9-0 in a Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference women's tennis match Friday afternoon.

Brooke Barfield, Faith Sutton, Reagan Hinton, Samantha Reaves, Jentry Carlyle and Savannah Sutton each claimed a singles point for the Eagles. Reaves and Carlyle each shut out their respective opponent.

Barfield-Hinton, F. Sutton-Reaves and Carlyle-S. Sutton triumphed in doubles play.

Wayne Christian (4-1 overall, 2-0 CCC) entertains conference member Johnston Christian on Monday. First serve is 4 p.m.

Hunt nips Saints

WILSON -- Southern Wayne seized two doubles points, but Wilson Hunt claimed a 5-4 decision in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

The tandems of April Tucker-Morgan Roberts and Amber Bowden-Jessica Best prevailed in doubles for the Saints. Roberts and Tara Hirsch each earned a singles point.

Southern Wayne entertains Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.

Volleyball

Eagles take CCC win

DURHAM -- Wayne Christian outlasted Trinity Christian-Durham 25-15, 24-26, 25-15, 20-25, 15-6 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Friday afternoon.

Senior Katie Daniels pounded out 10 kills and served eight aces. Kaitlyn Kosuda and Devan Isenhower each contributed six kills, while Summer Brathwaite provided four kills.

Britney O'Hara collected 10 digs, while junior Meredith Craig had two blocks. Hanna Kaler dished out 19 assists to go along with seven kills.

Wayne Christian (9-3 overall, 7-1 CCC) plays host to league foe Johnston Christian on Monday. The match begins at 4 p.m.

Boys' soccer

Chargers defeated

Wayne Country Day just couldn't make the net wiggle.

The Chargers just missed converting an early goal and Faith Christian-Rocky Mount claimed a 6-0 victory on the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference scene Friday afternoon.

"We had a game plan that depended on an early goal," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "If our shot in the first minute hadn't gone just wide of the far post, but had actually gone in, this might have been a drastically different game."

The short-handed Chargers, who competed with no subs, battled against a more-experienced Patriots squad. Clayton Kelly posted a hat trick (three goals) for state-ranked Faith Christian. Seth Muller notched two goals, while Louis Griffin added one goal.

"I am so very proud of my guys tonight," said Heinemann. "A lesser group of players would've rolled over and let this extremely talented team 'kill' them. (The guys) played with heart and intensity the entire game.

"I continue to be amazed at the heart these boys show from game to game, and I can't stress how pleased I am with the future of the WCDS soccer program."

Faith Christian owned a 17-12 edge in shots.

Wayne Country Day (4-8-0 overall, 0-2-0 CPIC) entertains Ahoskie Ridgecroft on Tuesday.

Golf

Walnut Creek LGA

Hiromi Sueki emerged the play-of-the-day winner during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Jewel Ivey claimed low gross. Novella Zambelli and Faye Franklin seized first net and low putts, respectively.

In Eastern Ladies League play, Zambelli had first net in second flight competition. Franklin, Evelyn Rose, Pete Reaves and Betty Holloway also placed in their respective flights. The meet was contested at Falling Creek Country Club in Kinston.

JV sports

* Football -- Southern Wayne 46, Jones Senior 0 -- Jequan Cobb had rushing touchdowns of 21 and 10 yards for the Saints. Tobias Flow, Jamie Dove, Devonte Ashford and Minek Ford also had scores on the ground. Delfawn Worrells tacked on a 50-yard touchdown reception from Quintin Smith as the Saints compiled 462 yards of total offense. Quintae Bradshaw and Robert Lennox had fumble recoveries, and Worrells added an interception. The Saints (3-0 overall) travel to Goldsboro next Thursday.
