Frost, Jones Senior upend Saints

TRENTON -- Southern Wayne found offensive success throughout Friday night's showdown with Jones Senior, unfortunately for the Saints they never figured out how to stop Covair Frost.

Frost, a dual-threat quarterback in the Jones Senior spread-option offense, tossed two touchdown passes and ran for an additional score as the Trojans topped the Saints 42-29.

"He (Frost) is such a good athlete, he makes plays all over the field," said Sainst head coach Bob Warren. "We gave up some plays in the passing game, but I think that was more a testament to their athletes than a breakdown by our defense."

The Saints dug themselves a 14-0 hole in the first quarter, which proved to be too much to overcome.

"We got down early, and it's always tough to come back on a team with an offense like that," said Warren. "Jones Senior is a very good football team, and I was happy with how our kids fought back."

Despite the two-touchdown margin of victory, Southern Wayne did have an opportunity to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.

Trailing 36-29, the Saints' defense stiffened and got the ball back for the offense with less than a minute remaining in the game.

Junior Eric Long took a handoff and tried to make a game-changing play, only to see the ball come loose and fall into the hands of Trojan defensive tackle Josh Ward. The senior returned the fumble 20 yards to put the game away with one second left on the clock.

Southern Wayne was led offensively by running back James Jones, who tallied 181 yards on 25 carries and one touchdown.

"I didn't realize James had that many yards, but I certainly knew that he had a good night," said Warren. "We were able to move the ball on some of our off-tackle runs with both James and our freshman fullback Kenan Winn."

The Saints (1-3 overall) will host Goldsboro on Friday.
