SEVEN SPRINGS -- It was a battle of first-year head coaches when South Lenoir and Spring Creek met on the gridiron Friday night.

Blue Devils head coach Kevin Wilson got the debut victory, as South Lenoir bested the Gators 49-6 in the swamp. The win was the fourth straight for South Lenoir over Spring Creek, all in season-opening games.

Sophmore running back Josh Hatch led the potent Blue Devil ground game, to the tune of 271 yards on just 12 carries and three scores. Cequon Phillips added 126 yards on nine totes.

South Lenoir rushed for 516 yards as a team.

For Spring Creek the story of the night offensively was a short one, the team totaled 53 yards of total offense and was led by a 27-yard night on the ground from Ricky Brayboy.

"Ricky looked good a couple of times running the ball," Gators head coach Aaron Sanders said. "He stepped up and made some nice plays."

The Gators highlight of the evening came in the first quarter when Courtland Jones fielded a kickoff and returned the ball for a 78-yard touchdown. A moment that gave the young Spring Creek squad some confidence.

"We were all kind of shocked by that play," Sanders said. "I know there were a lot of happy people for Courtland when he got in the endzone, and it gave the team a reason to get excited, and that's what being on a team is all about."

The Gators will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Hobbton. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
