PIKEVILLE -- North Lenoir needed just three games to earn a season opening 25-23, 25-16, 25-19 win at C.B. Aycock on Tuesday.

Marrisa Lanier had seven kills for the Hawks (1-0 overall). Kristen Davenport added four kills.

North Lenoir visits county archrival South Lenoir today while C.B. Aycock (0-1) travels to Greene Central on Thursday.

Gators fall on road

NEWTON GROVE -- Just 24 hours after beating Hobbton in its season-opening match, Spring Creek couldn't duplicate the feat Tuesday afternoon.

The Wildcats pulled out a 25-23, 25-22, 15-25, 5-25, 17-15 non-conference victory.

Shaquita Brooks paced the Gators' offense with 17 kills and two blocks. Kristin Smith added 13 kills, two blocks and seven aces. Alex Benton supplied three kills and three aces.

Randi Oxendine dished out 19 assists and served three aces.

Spring Creek (1-1 overall) entertains Midway next Tuesday.

Soccer - Hawks stop KHS

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir kicked off its boys' soccer season with a 3-2 victory over Kinston on Monday evening.

Hugo Garcia found the back of the net twice for the Hawks and capped his offensive outburst with an assist on teammate Jamie Ellson's goal. Ryan Kramer also added an assist in the win.

North Lenoir keeper Lane Sampley stopped 12 Viking shots to earn the victory in net.

The Hawks (1-0 overall) begin play today in the four-team invitational at Arendell-Parrott Academy.

Eagles rout Northwood

FAYETTEVILLE -- Gregory Alexander booted home a corner kick from Kyle Sasser just four minutes in and Wayne Christian rolled past Northwood Temple 11-0 on Tuesday.

Alexander scored on a pass from Brad Yelverton in the 18th minute and seven minutes later Josh Powers found the back of the net. Taylor Gardener extended the lead to 4-0 just before halftime.

Alexander, Yelverton and Powers each scored twice in the second half and Sasser added a goal as well. The Eagles (2-0) finished with 14 corner kicks and goalie Chase King recorded seven saves.

Wayne Christian will face Community Christian on Friday in the Brittany Tournament in Wilson.

Tennis - Rams blank Panthers

BEAULAVILLE -- Defending 2-A state champion Greene Central got its season off to a strong start with an 8-0 win at East Duplin on Tuesday.

Elizabeth McLawhorn, Lauren Carraway, Samantha Taylor, Jessica Gray, Abby Sugg and Abbey Dail each recorded singles victories for the Rams.

The doubles tandems of McLawhorn-Carraway, Taylor-Gray and Sugg-Dail picked up doubles wins for Greene Central.

"It was great to get a convincing win against a quality opponent in our season opener," Rams head coach Donald Clark said. "Marcia Pearson has built a an outstanding program at East Duplin. She lost five seniors to graduation, but she has a scrappy team that will just get better with experience. Overall, I was very pleased with the play of my team."

Golf - Walnut Creek LGA

Betty Holloway emerged the play-of-the-day winner during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Mary Morris took low gross, while Pete Reaves won low net. Linda Cannon claimed low putts.

In Eastern Ladies League action, Mary Ann Sutton seized second gross and Novella Zambelli won second net in second flight play. Faye Franklin had the second gross in third flight, while Holloway had second net in fifth flight.

* Hobbton volleyball d. Spring Creek 25-11, 25-19 -- The Wildcats swept the regular-season series as the Gators fell to 0-2 overall.

* C.B. Aycock volleyball d. North Lenoir 25-11, 25-27, 6-25 -- The Golden Falcons improve to 1-0 while the Hawks drop to 0-1.
