GARNER -- One streak ended, while one continued on the Garner High School baseball diamond Wednesday evening.
Wayne County Post 11 tallied at least one run in seven of nine innings and cruised to a 17-7 victory over long-time nemesis Garner Post 232. Coach Brad Reaves' club pushed its win streak to seven games, while Post 232 had its seven-game win streak snapped.
John Wooten paced Wayne County with four hits and six RBI, including a three-run homer in the ninth inning. Catcher Zach Wright batted 4-for-6 with an RBI. Nolan Lancaster (RBI), Tyler Edwards (two RBI) and Walker Gourley provided two hits apiece.
Post 11 battered four Garner pitchers for 17 hits in the lengthy nine-inning, non-division contest. Wayne County (13-3 overall) has accumulated 85 runs during the last seven games and allowed 45.
In his first start since June 8, Post 11 hurler Jesse Randolph permitted four runs on seven hits in four innings. He threw 50 pitches, including 36 strikes, but gave way to Rosewood product Taylor Allen.
Allen tossed two innings of one-hit, two-strikeout relief and earned the mound win. Lancaster and Edwards combined to throw the final three innings. Edwards recorded four strikeouts.
Wayne County swept the regular-season series and improved to 6-0 against Area I West opposition this summer.
Edwards cranked out an RBI single and Wooten delivered a two-run double as Post 11 built a six-run cushion through 1 1/2 innings of play. Garner climbed within 6-3 on Landon Adams' two-out, two-RBI double.
A dropped fly ball led to two third-inning runs for Wayne County.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, Post 11 put nine runs on the board in the final four innings. Lancaster, Gourley, Wright, Edwards and Wooten provided the offensive power during that stretch.
Wayne County entertains Durham Post 7 today. First pitch is 7 p.m. on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex in Dudley.
