NEW BERN -- After winning its first six games of the season, Wayne County Post 11 is headed in the wrong direction.
New Bern Post 24 claimed a nine-run advantage after two innings and coasted to a 10-4 victory at Boykin Field on the New Bern High campus Saturday evening. Wayne County (6-3 overall) suffered its third consecutive defeat and dropped to 1-3 in Area I East South Division play.
Post 11 right-hander Taylor Allen immediately encountered first-inning trouble. A lead-off walk, infield error and missed tag on a routine ground ball allowed New Bern to load the bases with no outs.
Allen couldn't locate a two-strike breaking pitch that hung over the plate and Gabe Brown drilled it into left field for a two-RBI single. Sam Sanders followed another walk with an RBI single up the middle to make it 4-0. Bobby Dorman's RBI single capped the five-run uprising.
Allen ran into more trouble in the second after retiring the first batter. A walk, a single and Gabe Brown's run-scoring double spelled the end of the night for Allen. Another run scored on an error.
Down 9-0, four Post 11 relievers limited New Bern to one run over the next six innings.
Wayne County got on the scoreboard in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Bryant Hill. In the sixth, Walker Gourley was hit by a pitch to open the inning. John Wooten singled to center and Zach Wright reached on an infield hit to load the bases.
One out later, Cambric Moye singled to left for two runs. Nolan Lancaster drove in the final run with a bad-hop single to center.
Post 11 couldn't keep up the offensive momentum and managed only two runners in the final three innings.
Wayne County will attempt to end its three-game skid at home tonight against Kinston. First pitch is 7 p.m.
