Youthful Post 11 pitching staff fares well

AHOSKIE -- Wayne County Post 11 never paints a Rembrandt when it plays Area I East rival Ahoskie.

But, despite the ugliness of the game, Post 11 manages to win.

Zach Wright clubbed a home run and Wayne County capitalized on nine walks in an 8-4 victory Saturday afternoon. Post 11 remained unbeaten in four outings this season.

Wayne County will take the week off for final exams and return to the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex next Saturday. Post 11 will entertain Area I East foe Tarboro at 4 p.m. and tangle with long-time nemesis Garner shortly after the first game.

Ahoskie owned a 9-5 advantage in hits, but Wayne County received another solid effort from its young pitching staff. Jesse Randolph and Eric DuBose each threw three scoreless innings and combined for six strikeouts.

Overall, four Post 11 hurlers combined to permit five hits and two walks.

Ahoskie starter Jacob Dunlow issued eight free passes in three-plus innings. Wayne took advantage of Dunlow's wildness to score seven runs.

But things got a little too close at the end.

Post 11 had what appeared to be a comfortable 8-3 lead in the ninth with John Wooten attempting to post his second scoreless inning. He gave up a lead-off double to Bryce Callipher before retiring the next two batters on fly balls to center field.

Eli Spruill reached on an infield hit and Dunlow singled home a run. Dylan Ralph kept the rally alive by reaching on an infield hit, which brought the tying run to the plate. Wooten recorded the final out on a fly ball to right field.
