Janielle Daniel punched in two goals as Eastern Wayne thrashed Kinston 5-0 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference women's soccer match Friday evening.

It was the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Warriors (9-6 overall, 7-3 ECC) clinched the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye for the conference tournament, which kicks off Tuesday. They will play host to the Wilson Beddingfield-Southern Wayne winner in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Daniel broke the scoreless tie in the 33rd minute off an assist from Crystal Lemmon.

Cady May opened the second-half scoring with an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute. Kesley Griffith found the back of the net six minutes later off Mary Catherine Howell's assist.

Daniel collected her second goal in the 58th minute. Deborah Doran closed out the Warriors' road victory with a goal off Lemmon's assist in the 63rd minute.

Eastern Wayne owned an 18-2 edge in shots and 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Kinston (3-10-2, 2-7-1) faces fourth-seeded Charles B. Aycock in a first-round tournament match Tuesday.

CBA gets shutout

DUDLEY -- Taylor DeMartini strikes again.

A sophomore midfielder, DeMartini notched her second game-winning goal in as many outings in C.B. Aycock's 1-0 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Southern Wayne.

The Golden Falcons (7-9-2 overall, 4-5-1 ECC) play Kinston in a first-round, ECC tournament game on Tuesday. The sixth-seeded Saints (1-12, 0-10) oppose third-seeded Wilson Beddingfield.

The semifinals are Wednesday at Eastern Wayne.

Courtney Sheeks earned the shutout in goal for the Golden Falcons.

Softball

Hawks cruise

LaGRANGE -- Kristen Davenport smacked a grand slam and finished with five RBI during North Lenoir's 17-2 rout of Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe North Pitt.

Davenport ended the 41/2-inning contest with three hits.

Courtney Hill batted 2-for-4 with three RBI. Nicole Howard added three hits and an RBI, while Taylor Sutton contributed two hits and an RBI.

North Lenoir (14-4 overall, 8-0 EPC) visits Goldsboro on Tuesday. A victory assures of the Hawks of at least a share of the EPC regular-season championship.

Conquerors roll

Pitchers Jennifer Christopher and Elizabeth Weeks combined for nine strikeouts in Faith Christian's 16-1 romp over Mt. Calvary in their N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal Region 2-A East game.

Christopher, Brooke Anderson and Kaitlyn Floars pounded out two hits apiece for the Conquerors.

Faith Christian plays Trinity Christian-Greenville on Monday.

Rosewood prevails

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Rosewood ended a three-game skid with an 8-1 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference rival Spring Creek.

The Eagles (4-10 overall, 3-4 Carolina) snapped a string of 21 scoreless innings after consecutive shutout losses to Princeton, Ayden-Grifton and North Johnston.

Ivy Campbell scored the Gators' lone run.

Jags top Cougars

Martinique Thomas batted 2-for-2 and Goldsboro turned two double plays defensively during its 13-0, five-inning loss to Farmville Central on Friday afternoon.

Dominique Sauls and Jenika Williams added one hit apiece for the Cougars, who fell to 0-10 overall and 0-7 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference.

"Our girls gave a great effort and played hard," said first-year Goldsboro coach T.J. Lancaster. "We lost focus in the second inning and gave up six runs after we had gotten two outs."

The Cougars entertain North Lenoir at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Eagles are perfect

SMITHFIELD -- Cynthia Burroughs and Kayla Kennedy combined for a perfect game in the pitcher's circle as Wayne Christian hammered Johnston Christian 15-0 on Friday afternoon.

Traci Davis and Carly Hightower spearheaded the Eagles' 11-hit attack with three hits apiece. Burroughs added a triple in the contest, which was shortened to three innings due to the mercy rule.

Wayne Christian (11-2 overall) visits 2-A powerhouse Fayetteville Christian on Monday.

Baseball

W. Christian dominates

SMITHFIELD -- Jeremy Jefferson crushed a home run as Wayne Christian dismantled Johnston Christian 21-0 in a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference contest Friday afternoon.

Jefferson and Adam Brannan combined for a three-hitter in the contest, which was shortened to four innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Jefferson permitted two hits and logged four strikeouts, while Brannan allowed one hit to go with two strikeouts.

Steven Gallagher emerged the Eagles' offensive leader with three hits in three at-bats. Brannan and Donte Arthur contributed two hits apiece.

Wayne Christian (10-2 overall, 7-0 CCC) puts its 31-game CCC win streak on the line at home Monday against Community Christian.

N. Lenoir triumphs

BETHEL -- North Lenoir clinched a share of its fourth consecutive Eastern Plains 2-A Conference championship with a 12-1, six-inning victory over North Pitt on Friday evening.

Mike Wetherington threw a complete-game, two-hitter for the Hawks, who improved to 14-1 overall this season. He posted six strikeouts and surrendered one earned run.

John Alphin, C.C. Croom (three RBI) and Carter Capps (two RBI) cranked out three hits apiece. Alphin and Capps also tripled.

North Lenoir (8-0 EPC) is the guest of Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Chargers stopped

ROCKY MOUNT -- Faith Christian profited from four errors in a three-inning stretch and cruised past Wayne Country Day 14-3 on Friday afternoon.

Cameron Strickland (double) and Cory Robert led the Chargers with two hits apiece. Ryan Ford doubled, while Kevin Herring drove in a run. Cameron Ford provided one hit.

The Fords combined to give up nine hits in the five-inning affair.

Wayne Country Day (5-10 overall) dropped to 3-3 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play. The Chargers visit perennial 1-A power Waccamaw Academy on Wednesday. First pitch is 4 p.m.

GHS falls

Alex Aldridge recorded Goldsboro lone's hit in an 18-0, five-inning loss to Farmville Central on Friday afternoon.

Donald Lewis threw two scoreless innings for the Cougars.

Goldsboro fell to 0-13 overall and 0-7 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference.

Correction

In Friday's edition of the News-Argus, sixth-seeded Timmy Parker was inadvertently omitted from the Eastern Wayne-Kinston men's tennis results.

Parker won 6-1, 6-1 as the Warriors defeated the Vikings 9-0 and not 8-1, as reported.

The News-Argus regrets the mistake and any inconvenience it might have caused.

JV sports

* Wayne Christian baseball 19, Bethel Christian 4 -- Chase Darden, Ryan Cooke and Caleb Nelson each smashed an inside-the-park home run for the Eagles. Kyle Sasser logged five strikeouts in three innings on the mound. Wayne Christian (4-7 overall) visits Cape Fear Christian on Monday.

Middle schools

* Rosewood softball 13, Spring Creek 0 -- Janna Price had two hits for Spring Creek and Ashley Parks added one.

* Spring Creek baseball 15, Rosewood 3 -- Zack Harrell and Adam Haggerty led the Gators with two hits each. Spring Creek (9-2-1 overall) travels to Mount Olive on Monday.
