Eastern Wayne secured two doubles points and edged perennial Class 4-A power Wilmington Laney, 5-4, on the Wayne Community College courts Wednesday afternoon.

The Warriors' No. 1 tandem of Drew Jackson-David Benton and the No. 2 duo of Chris Knobling-Eric Barnes each emerged victorious to seal the non-conference win.

Jackson, Knobling and Barnes each claimed a straight-set singles win.

"It was awesome," said Warriors head coach Nancy Dawson. "My boys played a great match."

On Tuesday, Eastern Wayne drilled Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Wilson Hunt 8-1. Jackson, Benton, Knobling, Barnes and Thomas Jackson each earned a singles win. The latter Jackson pulled out a three-set decision over Hunt's Austin Harrell.

D. Jackson-Benton, Knobling-Barnes and T. Jackson-Marvin Bowman each cruised to easy doubles wins.

The Warriors (9-4 overall, 5-1 ECC) travel to Wilson Beddingfield today.

Softball

Aycock rolls in ECC

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock only needed six innings to dispatch Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Kinston, 11-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

Leigh Smith powered the Golden Falcon offense with three hits. Cara Frederick drove in three runs. Stevie Savage, Jessica Hare and Brittany Ford each notched two hits.

Emily Jordan pitched five innings of one-run ball to earn the win. Autumn Pittman tossed a scoreless sixth to complete the game for Aycock.

Aycock (14-3 overall) entertains Wilson Hunt on Friday.

Tennis

Rams dominate Hawks

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central improved to 5-1 in on the Eastern Plains 2-A scene with a 9-0 thrashing of North Lenoir.

Eric Simmons, James Kersey, Trey Cash, Colby Chase, Andrew Harrison and Jason Perry all earned singles points for the Rams.

"I think we had a little bit of a letdown from yesterday's win," Greene Central coach Brad Sauls said. "But we were still able to win on all the courts while not playing our best tennis."

The tandems of Simmons-Cash, Kersey-Perry and Chase-Harrison each picked up doubles wins. Sauls was especially pleased with Perry's play.

"Jason continues to get better," Sauls said. "He has greatly improved his patience on the court and his ability to incorporate strategy."

The Rams rose to 10-4 overall.

Baseball

Cougars ousted

Jones Senior took advantage of five Goldsboro errors and picked up a 14-1, non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon.

Marquise Dance pitched 5 2/3 innings for Goldsboro, striking out seven and not allowing an earned run.

Carl Johnstone and Keith Jackson each belted two hits in the loss. Darius Hill, Josh McCoy and Donald Lewis each added one hit.

Goldsboro (0-11 overall) entertains Tarboro on Friday.

Track

Eagles win tri-meet

Rosewood won seven individual events and three relays as the Eagles blazed past Spring Creek and the Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf on Wednesday.

Olivia Neal won both the pole vault and the 400-meter run. Other individual first-place finishers for the Eagles were India McGowan (high jump), Brittney Cabala (triple jump), Jennifer Page (1,600 run), Casey Binda (800) and Brittany Duffey (3,200).

Rosewood (15-7 overall) faces North Johnston and North Duplin on April 24.

Soccer

CBA, KHS play to draw

KINSTON -- Taylor DeMartini scored Charles B. Aycock's lone goal on an assist from Caroline Schlaeppi in a 1-1 tie at Kinston on Tuesday.

The Golden Falcons (4-7-2 overall) exited 2-4-1 against Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opposition.

Aycock entertains South Central today.

Lane Tree LGA

Bunkie Parker claimed game-of-the-week honors during weekly tournament play at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Nan Jarrell and Linda Watson seized low net and low putts, respectively.

Watson (first low gross) and Donna Adams (first low gross) fared well in championship and first flight competition, respectively, during an Eastern League tournament earlier this month.
