WILSON -- Eric DuBose pitched a complete game for Charles B. Aycock in a 3-2, non-conference victory over Wilson Fike.

Josh Matin led the Aycock offense with an RBI double. Bryant Hill and Zach Wright each belted RBI singles in the win.

C.B. Aycock (13-4 overall) travels to Princeton on Monday.

WCDS posts win

AHOSKIE -- Cameron Ford permitted seven hits in six-plus innings as Wayne Country Day dumped Ridgecroft 6-2 on the Hertford County High School diamond Wednesday afternoon.

Ford surrendered two runs (one earned) and posted four strikeouts. Ryan Ford recorded the final out with the bases loaded for the save.

The Fords combined for three hits as the Chargers avenged a loss to the Rams, members of the Tarheel Independent Conference. Cole Davis (one hit), David Wilson (RBI), Cory Robert (RBI), Jack Scott (RBI) and Hil Tanner (RBI) also contributed to the win.

"We played well last night and if we can continue to play this way, we can turn this season around," said WCDS head coach Michael Taylor.

Wayne Country Day (3-8 overall) entertains county archrival Wayne Christian on Saturday. First pitch is 2 p.m.

Cary tops Goldsboro

Cary used a 12-run first inning to build a lead it would never relinquish, beating Goldsboro 13-0 in five innings.

The Cougars tallied four hits. Keith Jackson, Josh McCoy, Darryl Williamson and Alex Aldridge all singled in the defeat.

Goldsboro falls to 0-8 overall, and will return to the diamond today to take on North Lenoir in an Eastern Plains 2-A contest.

Saints dropped

GREENVILLE -- Southern Wayne only managed four hits in an 11-1, non-conference loss to D.H. Conley on Thursday.

Mathew Holmes, Tyler Edwards, Robert Herring and Scott Holloman all singled for the Saints.

Southern Wayne (8-7 overall) visits Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday.

Softball

Hawks edge Warriors

Perennial Class 2-A power North Lenoir escaped Eastern Wayne with a 6-5, non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon.

Casey Mitchell, Caitlin Turner, Carrie Adams, Brianna Williams, Morgan Smith and Lani Fricks each recorded a hit for the Warriors.

Fricks yielded 12 hits and six runs (five earned) to go along with one strikeout in seven innings of work.

Eastern Wayne dropped to 4-12 overall.

Tennis

Eagles fall on road

FARMVILLE -- Senior Trevor Morris posted Rosewood's lone point in an 8-1, non-conference loss at Farmville Central on Wednesday afternoon.

Morris defeated the Jaguars' Ben Stone 6-4, 6-4.

Also competing for the Eagles were Johnathan Rudolph, Zach Tubb, Jamez Hernandez, Josh Pipkin, Michael Edwards, Aaron Moore and Michael Womack.

Rosewood fell to 0-2 overall.

Warriors best Saints

Drew Jackson kept Benny Segura off the board in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number one singles as Eastern Wayne defeated county rival Southern Wayne 8-1.

Chris Knobling, Eric Barnes, Thomas Jackson and Will Kastner each recorded a singles point for the Warriors.

Chris King notched Southern Wayne's only point.

The teams of Jackson-Beuton, Knobling-Barnes and Jackson-Bowman all won doubles points for the Warriors.

Track

Gaines fares well in meet

Chantel Gaines posted victories in both the 200- and 400-meter races as Charles B. Aycock finished third among four teams Thursday.

Eastern Wayne won the 400- and 800-meter relays, and also picked up a first-place finish from Shannon Rouse. Rouse won the 3,200-meter run in 15 minutes, 42 seconds.

Southern Wayne's top performer was Clarice Sherard, who won the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches) and took home bronze in the shot put with a distance of 29 feet.

The annual Wayne County Girls Track and Field Championships are Monday at Eastern Wayne. The events begin at 4 p.m.

JV sports

* Eastern Wayne baseball 4, D.H. Connely 1 -- Zach Beachem went the distance on the mound for the Warriors and supplied the game-winning hit -- a fourth-inning, three-run homer. Hunter Newsome added an RBI single. Eastern Wayne (12-5 overall) entertains Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

* Charles B. Aycock baseball 9, J.H. Rose 6 -- Jeff Carmel drove in two runs and scored twice. Dylan Barfield, Tyler Farmer and Matt Refferta each reached base once in the victory. Carmel pitched three innings of no-hit relief to earn the win for the Golden Falcons, who improved to 11-4 overall. Aycock will host Princeton on Monday.

Middle schools

* Eastern Wayne baseball 5, Norwayne 3 -- Wes Stewart belted a two-run home run to break a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning on Thursday. Stewart finish 2-for-3 with three RBI. Benito Avila also notched two hits including a double. Cameron Taylor led the Cobras with two hits.

* Grantham baseball 15, Greenwood 0 -- Keenan Winn displayed his strong hitting stroke to the tune of a 3-for-4, five-RBI night. Jeremy Taylor and Taylor Raynor each added three hits for the Bulldogs. Winn earned the victory on the mound by pitching three shutout innings.
