Golden Falcon softball team hammers Vikings

KINSTON -- Pitchers Emily Jordan and Autumn Pittman combined for a four-hitter as Charles B. Aycock hammered Kinston 12-1 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference softball game Friday.

Jordan surrendered an unearned run on three hits and fanned six Viking batters in a four-inning stint. Pittman tossed two innings of one-hit, two-strike scoreless relief.

Cara Frederick paced the Golden Falcon offense with three hits and three RBI. Leigh Smith, Brittany Ford and Torie Benton (RBI) supplied two hits apiece. Ford scored twice, while Smith doubled.

Jordan (RBI), Stevie Savage, Anna Sullivan (RBI) and Amber Baker (RBI) each cranked out a hit.

C.B. Aycock (6-0 overall, 1-0 ECC) visits Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Wayne Christian triumphs

PINE LEVEL -- Defending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state champion Wayne Christian emerged victorious in an eight-team, Carolina Christian 1-A Conference match.

Eric Williams fired a nine-hole round of 38 for the Eagles, who edged Cape Fear Christian 168-174 for the top team spot. Matt Davis and Hayden Gardner each carded a 42, while Jay Kornegay fired a 46.

Davis Taylor and Taylor Gardner also participated in the meet.

Wayne Christian (15-0 overall) entertains Cary Christian on Monday at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Baseball

Warriors rebound

SNOW HILL -- Coming off a no-hit loss in conference play Friday afternoon, Eastern Wayne discovered some offensive punch on Saturday.

The Warriors registered 13 hits in a 10-5, non-conference conquest of Greene Central on the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex diamond. Colton Fulghum led the visitors with three hits and four RBI in four at-bats.

"We had to forget about yesterday and move forward," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jabo Fulghum. "Sometimes you have to have a wake-up call. I'm proud of our boys for coming back."

Jose Ponce (RBI) and Nolan Lancaster (two RBI) contributed two hits apiece. Tyler Wicks and Adron Hollowell each plated a run. John Wooten doubled.

Anthony Otellio earned his first mound win of the season. He tossed five innings, striking out six and giving up one earned run one four hits and five walks. Hollowell, called up from the JV, supplied two innings of one-hit, three strikeout relief.

"Anthony threw the ball well," said Fulghum. "He settled right in, kept his fastball down and his change-up down."

Michael Speedy and Trey Beaman each posted two hits, including a triple, for the Rams. Beaman also plated two runs. David Stallings collected the other hit.

Justin Everette suffered the pitching loss.

Eastern Wayne (4-4 overall) entertains Wilson Beddingfield next Tuesday, while Greene Central (4-2) plays host to Spring Creek.

Saints march in ECC

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne battered Wilson Beddingfield's pitching staff for 18 hits in an 18-4, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference victory Friday afternoon.

Jordan Williams drove in six runs on two doubles and a grand slam home run. Scott Holloman delivered a pair of singles and two RBI. Tyler Edwards singled and doubled with an RBI.

Jordan Hood had two singles and two RBI, while Ryan Mesimer (RBI) singled and doubled. Ricky Oddon (RBI), Matt Holmes, Cody Davis (RBI) and Michael Douglas (RBI) also scratched out hits in the 4 1/2-inning contest.

Raymond Valezquez allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in the mound win. Wiggins threw the fifth.

Southern Wayne (5-2 overall, 1-1 ECC) travels to Kinston on Tuesday.

WCDS goes down

Pitcher Kyle Hufman permitted one hit and posted 10 strikeouts as Waccamaw shut down Wayne Country Day 12-1 on Friday afternoon.

Cameron Ford provided the Chargers' lone run on a solo homer. Jack Scott accounted for the other hit.

Wayne Country Day (0-2 overall) visits Parrott Academy on Monday.

Eagles grounded

Jordan Corbett threw a complete-game, one-hitter as Farmville Central downed Rosewood 7-0 on Friday afternoon.

Corbett recorded 12 strikeouts.

The Eagles (1-4 overall) suffered their second consecutive shutout of the season. They''ll attempt to snap their four-game losing streak Monday at Wilson Fike.

Soccer

Chargers post shutout

Brooke Norris converted a first-half penalty kick as Wayne Country Day stopped Ahoskie Ridgecroft 1-0 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

Norris scored in the 22nd minute.

Keeper Ellen Elmore registered six saves in goal.

"My defense played extremely well in today's game," said first-year WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "They organized well, communicated well and backed each other up. Sweeper Caroline Lewis played a fantastic game and got us out of several scary situations."

The Chargers (2-0, 1-0 CPIC) visits Oakwood on Monday.

Holeman leads Hawks

LaGRANGE -- Sasha Holeman collected two goals as North Lenoir blitzed South Central 4-0 at Bullock Field on Friday evening.

Jordan Hudson and Sara Farmer contributed one goal apiece. Hudson and Holeman combined for three assists.

North Lenoir (5-2 overall) entertains Spring Creek on Monday.

Bruins top Saints

DUDLEY -- Senior forward Lindsey DeRatt and freshman Jamie DeRatt provided the offense in Wilson Beddingfield's 5-1 decision over Eastern Carolina 3-A foe Southern Wayne.

Lindsey notched a hat trick (three goals), while Jamie scored twice.

Bruin keeper Styris Home recorded one save on a Saints' penalty kick.

The Saints' goal scorer was not reported to the News-Argus.

Southern Wayne (0-2 ECC) continues league play Tuesday at Kinston.

JV sports

* Eastern Wayne girls soccer 1, Washington 0 -- Grace Russo provided the lone goal for the Warriors. Keeper Tiffany Toy recorded nine saves in goal. Eastern Wayne (1-0-2 overall) entertains C.B. Aycock on Tuesday.

* Eastern Wayne baseball 5, Wilson Hunt 4 -- Adron Hollowell and Michael Fields banged out three hits apiece for the Warriors. Greg Simms contributed two hits, while Verasmo Ponce smashed a two-run homer. Zack Beachem recorded six strikeouts in a complete-game performance. Eastern Wayne (5-2 overall, 2-0 Eastern Carolina 3-A) entertains C.B. Aycock next Thursday.

* Flora MacDonald baseball 6, Wayne Christian 5 -- FMA tallied the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Chandler Harrell singled and Caleb Nelson doubled for the Eagles in their season-opening game. Greg Johnson and Kyle Sasser combined for eight strikeouts on the mound. Wayne Christian (0-1 overall) entertains Myrtle Grove Christian on Tuesday.

* TEACH tennis 6, Eastern Wayne 3 -- Dillon Cuddington, Sam Rouse, Travis Cuddington, Will Hoff and Katie Hoff each won singles matches for TEACH. Kevin Carpenter emerged the lone singles winner for the Warriors. He teamed with Sanjeev Srikantha to earn a point at No. 2 doubles. The third-seeded tandem of Seth Taylor-Scott Cronin also won for Eastern Wayne. The Warriors fell to 1-1 overall.
