SEVEN SPRINGS -- Greene Central improved its record to 4-0 with a 7-1 win at Spring Creek on Tuesday.

Michael Speedy, Trey Beaman and Chris Leggett each had two hits for the Rams. Beaman got Greene Central on the board with a two-run homer in the top of the first.

Speedy earned the win tossing two scoreless innings of relief.

Eagles open with win

Wayne Christian opened its season with an 8-1 home victory over Fayetteville Christian on Tuesday.

Adam Brannan, Jeremy Jefferson and Kyle Harrell each had a pair of hits for the Eagles. Michael Johnson added a triple and three RBI.

Brannan recorded the win while throwing a complete game and allowing one run on seven hits to go with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Wayne Christian (1-0) hosts Wayne Country Day on Thursday.

Midway outlasts RHS

Midway pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh of a tied ballgame and held on to defeat Rosewood 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Matt Neal went 3 for 4 and Holt Rains was 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI to lead the Eagles offensively.

Cody Richards took the loss in relief.

The Eagles (1-2) host Wilson Fike on Thursday.

Leopards hunt Rebels

SALEMSBURG -- Lakewood used a five-run fifth inning to top North Duplin 6-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Blake King finished 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Doug Lloyd took the loss on the mound for the Rebels.

North Duplin (0-2) hosts Hobbton on Thursday.

Softball

WCS tops FCS

Kayla Kennedy drove home Brittany Sullivan to break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh and lifted Wayne Christian to a 3-2 win over visiting Fayetteville Christian on Tuesday.

Sullivan who finished 3 for 3 on the evening, doubled to left to start the home half of the seventh.

Traci Davis got the start on the mound for the Eagles and allowed four hits while striking out 10 and walking one in 41/3 innings. Cynthia Davis finished the game on the mound striking out four and surrendering just one hit and no walks.

"I liked how we never gave up," Wayne Christian head coach Roger Longwell said. "The was tied at 1-1 and also at 2-2 before we had a pair of hits in the seventh to bring home that winning run. I am pleased with our performance this early in the season."

The Eagles (3-0) remain the top team in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association polls and will travel to Parrott Academy on Friday.

Saints topple Warriors

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne opened its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference schedule by defeating Eastern Wayne 3-0 on Tuesday.

Lindsey Pearsall paced the Saints offense by going 3 for 3 with two RBI. Brianna Lofton, Alyssa Bradshaw, Morgan Davis, Meredith Davis and Lauren Darden each added on hit.

Darden earned the win on the mound tossing a complete game allowing just two hits and striking out 12.

Southern Wayne (5-1, 1-0 ECC) hosts Wilson Beddingfield on Friday and Eastern Wayne visits Havelock today.

ND routs Lakewood

SALEMSBURG -- North Duplin earned its first win of the season with a 10-0 rout of Lakewood on Tuesday.

Elizabeth Lane (three RBI) and Brittany Coley each had two hits for the Rebels. Heather Hudson, Kristen Jones and Jenny Coley each had a hit.

Jessica Pridgen tossed a no-hitter striking out nine and walking four.

North Duplin (1-1) hosts Hobbton on Thursday.

Golf

Eagles win on links

CHAPEL HILL -- The state's defending Independent School 1-A state champion Wayne Christian, topped eight other schools in its first Carolina Christian Conference match at Governor's Club in Chapel Hill.

The Eagles tallied a team score of 156 followed by Cape Fear Christian Academy and Trinity School of Durham who both recorded scores of 169.

Matt Davis and Hayden Gardener both had nine-hole rounds of 38 for Wayne Christian. Eric Williams shot a 39 and Taylor Gardener fired a 41. Also participating for the Eagles were Andrew Radford and Davis Taylor.

Wayne Christian's next match is Thursday in Pine Level.

Walnut Creek LGA

Linda Cannon and Evelyn Rose shared play-of-the-day honors during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Novella Zambelli won low gross and Faye Franklin took low net in first flight competition. Betty Holloway (low gross), Pete Reaves (low net) and Frankie Farfour (low putts) claimed top honors in the second flight.

Rams down champs

SNOW HILL -- Losing just one match all afternoon, Greene Central knocked off No. 1-ranked and defending 1-A state champion Topsail 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Eric Simmons, James Kersey, Trey Cash, Colby Chase and Andrew Harrison each earned singles victories for the Rams.

"This is our best performance so far this season," Greene Central head coach Brad Sauls said. "Topsail has a strong team and every match was a nail biter. We really handled ourselves well in the third set tie breaks."

Eagles cage Gryphons

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Christian used strong singles play to defeat Rocky Mount 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Keith Council, Matt Rouse, Woody Sasser, Christopher Easom, Kenneth Giordano and Daniel Glover each recorded singles victories without dropping a game.

The Eagles (2-0) will face Wayne Country Day at Herman Park on Thursday.

EW grounds Hawks

LaGRANGE -- Drew Jackson, David Benton, Chris Knobling, Eric Barnes Thomas Jackson and Charlie Umstead each picked up singles win as Eastern Wayne handed North Lenoir a 9-0 loss on Tuesday.

The doubles tandems of Jackson-Benton, Knobling-Barnes and Michael Barnett-Marvin Bowman were all victorious for the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne visits Wilson Fike on Thursday.

S. Nash stops CBA

PIKEVILLE -- Southern Nash left Pikeville with a 7-2 victory over Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.

Blake Vail and Blake Cooper were the Golden Falcons lone winners in singles play.

Southern Nash improved to 8-0 and is the second-ranked 3-A squad in the state.

Aycock (3-1 overall) entertains Wilson Fike today.

Soccer

FCS drops WCS

Wayne Christian struggled to create scoring opportunities and suffered its first loss of the season in the form of a 2-0 setback at the hands of Fayetteville Christian on Tuesday.

Niki Fitzmorris recorded 15 saves for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian (1-1) hosts rival Wayne Country Day at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

EW turns back SW

DUDLEY -- Brandi Dean scored three goals and Eastern Wayne opened Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play with a 4-0 win at Southern Wayne on Thursday.

Dean scored in the first, sixth and 14th minutes and Crystal Lemmon added a goal. The Warriors (2-2, 1-0 ECC) finished with a 14-5 shots on goal advantage.

Eastern hosts Wilson Hunt on Friday.

CBA stumbles

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock's early-season struggles continued with a 3-0 loss at Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday.

The Golden Falcons (0-3 overall, 0-1 ECC) visit North Lenoir today.

Track

Eagles soar to win

Rosewood recorded a team scored of 103 and finished first in a home tri-meet with Wayne Christian and Midway on Tuesday.

Midway tallied a scored of 31 just ahead of Wayne Christian's 30.

First-place finishers for Rosewood were India McGowan (long jump and high jump), Olivia Neal (pole vault and 400 meter dash) and Sade Davis (100 meter hurdles). Jasmine Montgomery (100 and 200 meter dash), Jennifer Page (800 meter run and mile) and Shontal Johnson (300 meter hurdles) were also winners for Rosewood.

Rosewood's 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay teams also captured first place.

First place finishers for Wayne Christian were Chelsea Harris (shot put and discus) and the 400- and 800-meter relay teams.

Junior varsity

* Greene Central 8, Spring Creek 4 -- Josh Taylor went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Zach Chase finished 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI to lead Greene Central. Wes Silars (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Rams. Greene Central (3-0) hosts South Central today.

* Eastern Wayne 13, Southern Wayne 3 -- Adron Hollowell pitched a complete game for the Warriors and also had two hits. Greg Simms and Michael Fields each had two hits and Zach Beachem added a double. Eastern Wayne (4-2) visits Wilson Hunt on Friday.

* Wayne Christian soccer 2, Fayetteville Christian 0 -- Courtney Howell and Lindley Pierce each found the back of the net for Wayne Christian. The Eagles (1-0) face Wayne Country Day on Thursday.

Middle schools

* Spring Creek 2, Mount Olive 1 (10 innings) -- Duane Gurganus and Corey Howell combined for 18 strikeouts in the extra-inning affair. Howell provided the game-winning hit -- a bases-loaded single that scored James Lancaster. Tyler Gainey led Mount Olive's offense with two hits, including a double. Spring Creek (2-0 overall) visits Rosewood on Thursday.
