C.B. Aycock softball throttles Clayton

PIKEVILLE -- Emily Jordan and Ashley Shingleton combined for a three-hitter as Charles B. Aycock pounded Clayton 17-1 on Friday afternoon.

The duo combined for six strikeouts in the 4 1/2-inning contest.

Cara Frederick nearly hit for the cycle with a single, double and home run to go along with four RBI. Autumn Pittman (four RBI), Anna Sullivan (RBI), Brittany Ford (RBI) and Tori Benton (RBI) contributed two hits apiece.

Jordan and Amber Baker (two RBI) each slapped a double. Leigh Smith provided one hit in a four at-bats.

C.B. Aycock (2-0 overall) entertains North Lenoir at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Hawks blank EW

LaGRANGE -- Connor Jordan and Erin Deal combined for a two-hitter as North Lenoir cruised past Eastern Wayne 12-2 on Friday afternoon.

Jordan posted six strikeouts in a three-inning stint. Deal surrendered two hits and four walks, but fanned four Warrior batters in three innings of work.

Courtney Hill (two RBI) and Brittany Barrow (RBI) each collected two hits for the Hawks.

North Lenoir improved to 1-1 overall, while Eastern Wayne (1-2) suffered its second consecutive loss in a three-day stretch.

Saints go down

DUDLEY -- D.H. Conley plated three, third-inning runs and held on for a 3-0, non-conference triumph over Southern Wayne on Friday evening.

The Vikings built their advantage on an infield hit, two-RBI triple, infield error and wild pitch.

Saints right-hander Lauren Darden, despite posting 10 strikeouts, endured the mound loss. She scattered four hits in a complete-game effort.

Shortstop Alyssa Bradshaw and catcher Lindsay Pearsall pounded out two hits apiece for the Saints. Teammates Morgan and Meredith Davis each added a hit.

The teams meet again Tuesday at D.H. Conley.

Vikes upend Rams

KINSTON -- Casey O'Briant delivered three hits, but it wasn't enough as Greene Central dropped a 12-8, non-conference decision against Kinston on Friday afternoon.

Megan Lovett added two singles for the Rams, who fell to 1-1 overall.

The Vikings tagged losing pitcher Liz Webb for seven runs on four walks and three hits. Jessica Moore tossed the final five-plus innings and posted five strikeouts.

Bobbie Harris, the winning pitcher, paced Kinston with three hits.

The teams meet again Wednesday in Snow Hill.

Tennis

W. Christian rolls

DUDLEY -- Wayne Christian captured five singles matches and cruised past Southern Wayne 8-1 on Friday afternoon.

Taylor Gray, Matt Rouse, Chris Easom, Kenneth Giordano and Daniel Glover each claimed a straight-set win in singles. The same quartet, along with Woody Sasser, swept the doubles matches.

Kobi Hood claimed the Saints' lone singles point.

Baseball

Saints now 2-0

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne turned two double plays and handed East Duplin a 6-3 loss on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex diamond Friday afternoon.

Scott Holloman (RBI) and Matt Holmes each singled for the Saints, who improved to 2-0 overall.

Michael Douglas held the Panthers scoreless on four hits and six strikeouts in a five-inning stint. Raymond Velasquez provided one inning of one-strikeout relief.

East Duplin's Brandon Thigpen slugged a seventh-inning, two-run homer off reliever Tyler Edwards. However, the Panthers couldn't overcome 13 walks surrendered by their pitching staff.

Southern Wayne entertains North Johnston on Tuesday.

Rams post shutout

KINSTON -- Trey Beaman doubled twice and drove in two runs during Greene Central's 11-0, non-conference victory over Kinston at Viking Field on Friday afternoon.

Beaman finished the day 3-for-5. Chris Leggett (RBI) and Ryan Letchworth (three RBI) contributed two hits apiece. Letchworth added a double.

Justin Everett supplied two innings of three-strikeout, one-hit relief to earn the win. Alex Brann started on the mound.

Greene Central (2-0 overall) welcomes Kinston on Wednesday.

Aycock rolls

PIKEVILLE -- Will Edgerton cranked out three hits and Connor Narron mashed a three-run homer as C.B. Aycock out-slugged Clayton 10-7 on Friday.

Narron finished the day 2-for-2.

Zach Wright (2-for-3) added a two-run homer for the Golden Falcons, who remained unbeaten in two outings this season. Jordan Carr (RBI), Jon Taylor (two RBI) and Josh Martin (RBI) combined for four hits.

Derek Limbaugh scattered six hits and allowed four earned runs a four-inning stint. Jimmy Kearney, Eric Dubose and Martin each threw one inning.

C.B. Aycock is the guest of North Lenoir on Tuesday.

Eagles triumph

Taylor Allen banged out two hits and Matt Neal was the winning pitcher in Rosewood's 6-3, season-opening triumph over Hobbton.

Allen drove in one run, while Catawba football signee Holt Rains added one hit and an RBI.

Neal surrendered two hits and two runs (one earned) in a four-inning stint to go along with six strikeouts. Robert Franks provided two innings of one-hit, three-strikeout relief. Cody Richards threw the seventh and recorded two strikeouts.

Rosewood (1-0) travels to Farmville Central on Tuesday.

Golf

Aycock takes third

WILSON -- Austin Forrest fired a 79 during Charles B. Aycock's season-opening meet contested at Willow Springs Country Club.

Charles Cranford added an 85 for the Golden Falcons, who finished third behind host Wilson Fike (307) and SouthWest Edgecombe (349). Rocky Mount rounded out the team scoring with a 382.

Also contributing for Aycock was Keith Barnes, who shot a 91.

Fike's Zack Gliarmis claimed medalist honors with a 76.

The Golden Falcons (1-2 overall) return to action March 11 at Southern Wayne Country Club for the first of six Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference tournaments.

JV sports

* Eastern Wayne baseball 8, North Lenoir 2 -- Zack Beachem earned the win with a five-inning effort on the mound. Michael Fields and Adron Hollowell each tossed an inning in relief. Colton Fulghum, Josh Frederick and Hunter Newsome led the Warrior offense. Eastern Wayne (2-0) is the guest of Spring Creek on Monday.
