WINGATE -- Jenny Jackson threw a complete-game, three-hitter and Kelly Minshew provided the game-winning, sixth-inning RBI single as Mount Olive defeated Wingate 3-2 in the second game Wednesday afternoon.
Wingate claimed the opener 8-3.
The Trojans (7-3 overall) rallied from a one-run deficit in the fourth inning. Kat Cahoon smacked a two-out, bases-loaded RBI single. Morgan Whaley earned an RBI when she got plunked by the Wingate pitcher.
Wingate tied the game at 2-2 on an errant play and tried to steal another run, but freshman Aubrey Reinhard gunned down pinch-runner Jessica McGraw at the plate to end the inning.
Jackson (5-2) surrendered a two-out infield single in the Wingate seventh, but induced a game-ending pop-up to shortstop.
In game two, Mount Olive pulled within 3-2 on Jazzmine Lee's fourth-inning RBI single and Jackson's fifth-inning base knock. Wingate pushed four runs across in the sixth and Whaley drilled her first home run of the season -- a two-out smash over the center field fence.
The Trojans return to action next week in two spring break tournaments at Savannah, Ga. and Florence, S.C.
Trojan men fall
MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive slipped to No. 2 in this week's NCAA Division II East Region poll after Saturday's home loss against Limestone (S.C.) University.
California (Pa.) University took over the top slot.
The Trojans (21-5 overall) clinched at least a share of the Conference Carolinas regular-season title when Pfeiffer, ranked No. 4 in the region, lost Monday at Belmont Abbey. Mount Olive can claim the championship outright with a victory Saturday at archrival Barton or a Pfeiffer loss to Limestone on Friday.
Aro recognized
THOMASVILLE -- After posting singles and double victories last week, Mount Olive's Carol Aro is the Conference Carolinas women's tennis player of the week.
A senior from Brazil, Aro lost just three games in a singles match against Queens and teamed with Emily Escolas to pick up a doubles point. The Trojans eventually flushed the Royals 7-2 and remained unbeaten in conference play this season.
Mount Olive entertains St. Andrews at 3 p.m. today.
