DUDLEY -- Jordan Hill banged out two hits and drove in two runs as the Southern Wayne softball team hammered North Lenoir 9-0 in the season-opening game for both teams Wednesday.

Hill also scored twice for the Saints.

Meredith Davis tripled. Alyssa Bradshaw, Lindsey Pearsall and Kayla Gracyk supplied one hit apiece.

Right-hander Lauren Darden, the reigning News-Argus Pitcher of the Year, fanned 13 Hawks batters and yielded a third-inning, infield single.

The Saints (1-0 overall) entertain perennial power D.H. Conley on Friday. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

Baseball

Gators triumph

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- John Mozingo doubled and collected three RBI as Spring Creek nipped Midway 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon.

Mozingo and Adam Hinson (RBI) finished with two hits apiece for the Gators. Alex Casey drove in two runs, while Steven Best doubled in two at-bats.

Kevin Prunest emerged the winning pitcher, striking out four and allowing two hits in a four-inning stint. Casey threw the seventh to earn the save.

Spring Creek (1-0 overall) visits South Lenoir today.

Warriors go down

WINTERVILLE -- Eastern Wayne opened its 2008 campaign with a 9-6, non-conference loss at South Central on Wednesday afternoon.

Walker Gourley and Cambrick Moye (RBI) paced the Warriors with two hits apiece. Tyler Wicks drilled an RBI double, while Jose Ponce added a two-RBI double.

Eastern Wayne used five pitchers on the day. Starter John Wooten took the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) on five hits in 11/3 innings. Anthony Otellio, Nolan Lancaster and Walker Gourley saw time on the mound.

Michael Mintz threw two-plus innings of two-strikeout, hitless relief.

The Warriors (0-1 overall) entertain perennial power North Lenoir at 5 p.m. Friday. The Hawks seized back-to-back N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A titles in 2005 and 2006, and were runners-up a year ago.

E. Wayne cruises

LaGRANGE -- Crystal Lemmon delivered two assists and a goal in Eastern Wayne's season-opening, 4-1 victory over North Lenoir at Bullock Field.

Lemmon assisted Cady May in the fourth minute and tallied her lone goal in the 15th minute as the Warriors cruised ahead 2-0. After an own goal, Brandi Dean scored off Lemmon's assist and Marlo Bryan added the final goal just before halftime.

Eastern Wayne owned a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.

The Warriors (1-0 overall) entertain North Lenoir on Friday.
