MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive catcher Jason Sherrer and Ryan Schlecht earned the player- and pitcher-of-the-week honors, accorded by Conference Carolinas officials.
A senior from Arizona, Sherrer batted .591 (13-for-22) with three home runs and 10 RBI through the Trojans' first seven games. He hit .444 with a home run to help Mount Olive win two of three games over then-No. 2 Tusculum (Tenn.) in the Trojans' season-opening series.
Sherrer followed with an 8-for-10 performance in a three-game sweep over Lenoir-Rhyne, reaching base in his last 10 plate appearances.
Schlecht, a senior right-hander from Scottsdale, Ariz., posted a 2-0 record with a 1.64 earned run average in two appearances. Schlecht pitched four scoreless innings in relief in Mount Olive's 6-4 victory over Tusculum.
A transfer from Division I Charleston Southern, Schlecht got the start in game two against Lenoir-Rhyne and overcame a two-run first inning for a complete-game (seven innings) 10-2 victory. Schlecht retired 19 of 20 batters during one stretch, with the only baserunner reaching on an error. He finished with a five-hitter, striking out six and walking none.
Mount Olive (6-1) is ranked No. 2 in both the Collegiate Baseball Division II top 30 and the Ping Baseball Division II top 30.
Weather permitting, the Trojans visit Wingate University for a doubleheader today.
