TARBORO -- Goldsboro junior guard Keovanta McDuffie scorched the Tarboro defense for a career-high 46 points as the Cougars prevailed 81-72 on the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference scene.

McDuffie drained 14 field goals and converted 12 of 14 free throw attempts. Aric Sinclair scored 10 points, while Tavon Murchison and Doshamora Simms contributed nine and eight points, respectively.

Each team made 26 two-point field goals, while Tarboro owned a 3-2 edge in 3-pointers. However, the Cougars hit 23 of 30 free throws compared to 11 of 25 for the Vikings in the 32-minute affair.

Goldsboro (12-8 overall) improved to 5-2 against EPC opposition, and travels to North Pitt on Tuesday.

Conquerors triumph

Brad Floars paced five Faith Christian players in double figures with 17 points in a come-from-behind, 70-60 conquest of N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A foe Trinity Christian-Greenville.

Jeremy Sandlin added 15 points. Taylor Stocks scored 13, while Eric Powell and Austin Webber chipped in 11 points apiece.

Trinity led 36-31 at halftime, but the Conquerors answered with a 25-point, third-quarter outburst. That turned the five-point deficit into double-digit advantage.

Faith Christian (13-6 overall) visits NCCSA Coastal member Neuse Baptist of Raleigh on Tuesday.

Langston leads Bruins

PIKEVILLE -- Freshman Daquan Langston converted 15 free throws and finished with 19 points overall in Wilson Beddingfield's 55-49 win over Charles B. Aycock.

It was the Bruins' first Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference victory in six tries this season. Meanwhile, the Golden Falcons (3-17 overall) suffered their fifth consecutive league defeat in six outings.

Aycock led 15-9 after one quarter, but Beddingfield (2-18) responded with an 18-3 surge in the second quarter. The Bruins continued to pull away in the third before the Golden Falcons posted 22 fourth-quarter points.

"The killer was the second quarter," said Aycock coach David West.

Sophomore Terry Davis complemented Langston with an 18-point effort.

Khendra Reid led the Golden Falcons with 14 points. David Gurganus added nine, while Jordan Riley scored seven. Devon Newsome and Tyheim Pitt chipped in five points apiece.

Aycock visits state-ranked Kinston on Tuesday.

W. Christian falls

FAYETTEVILLE -- Northwood Temple created a nine-point, first-quarter lead and held on for a 60-52 victory over Wayne Christian in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play.

Mount Olive College signee Eric Williams recorded a double-double, 35 points and 20 rebounds, to go along with four steals for the visiting Eagles. Matt Davis added seven points.

Shea Glaesman contributed five points and nine rebounds. Adam Brannan dished out seven assists.

Wayne Christian (7-9 overall, 3-6 CCC) had its three-game win streak snapped. The Eagles entertain CCC member Trinity Christian of Raleigh for senior night on Monday.

Panthers edge Rebels

KENLY -- North Johnston sank five critical free throws in the final 20 seconds and squeezed past North Duplin 38-35 on Friday evening.

The Panthers trailed 35-34 when Daniel Radford drew a foul on a 3-point shot attempt with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. Radford hit all three shots to make it 36-34.

North Duplin was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit one of two free throws. The Rebels fouled the Panthers, who sealed their fourth Carolina 1-A Conference win this season at the charity stripe.

Radford led three North Johnston players in double figures with 12 points. Justin Price added 11, while Bryan Williams contributed 10.

Chris Graham provided a game-high 15 points for the Rebels, who dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-6 in the league. Quentin Graham knocked down 14 points.

North Duplin is the guest of Princeton on Tuesday.

Girls

Eagles extend streak

FAYETTEVILLE -- Hope Wright's go-ahead basket at the five-minute mark propelled Wayne Christian to a come-from-behind, 34-31 victory over Northwood Temple.

Wright collected a double-double, 13 points and 11 rebounds, for the Eagles, who picked up their fifth consecutive victory of the season. Jennifer Price added 11 points, two steals and two assists.

Hanna Kaler contributed eight points, 12 rebounds and two assists.

Wayne Christian (10-5 overall) climbed to 5-2 against Carolina Christian 1-A Conference opposition.

N. Duplin dealt defeat

KENLY -- Rebecca Coats paced North Duplin with a team-high 11 points, but Carolina 1-A Conference leader North Johnston seized a 50-38 win Friday evening.

Jodie Williamson added 10 points for the Rebels.

"We played North Johnston tooth and nail tonight," said North Duplin coach Danny Blackburn. "I'm very proud of our toughness. We just hit a spot in the third quarter where we couldn't get a basket to fall."

North Johnston outscored North Duplin 14-5 in the third period.

The Panthers' Leanne Birdsall led all scorers with 19 points.

Bruins run by CBA

WILSON -- Monique Spry led four Wilson Beddingfield players in double figures with 24 points in a 75-31 conquest of Eastern Carolina 3-A rival C.B. Aycock.

Anisa Dial added 12 points for the Bruins, ranked No. 1 in the latest NCpreps.com 3-A poll. Shanique Clay and senior Jean Best added 11 points apiece.

Yolanda Pitt was the Golden Falcons' lone scorer in double figures with 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Courtney Sheeks and Paige Garrett added four points apiece.

The Bruins, winners of 26 consecutive ECC regular-season games, held high-scoring Chantel Gaines to three points.

C.B. Aycock (2-18, 1-5 ECC) travels to Kinston on Tuesday.

Jags upend G. Central

FARMVILLE -- Greene Central's Dameka Waters recorded a double-double -- 16 points, 15 rebounds, but host Farmville Central claimed a 57-40 victory over its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe.

Jocelyn Connor added eight points for the Rams.

Greene Central (2-18, 1-5 EPC) welcomes Tarboro next Tuesday.

Wrestling

Eagles dump Rams

The Rosewood wrestling team prevailed in nine of 12 contested matches and hammered Greene Central 58-16 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Eagles (21-10 overall) honored seven seniors before the match -- captain Olivia Neal (103 pounds), Kelly Cosgrove (112), captain J.D. Baker (125), captain Chris Hare (130), Cameron Lowe (140), captain Brandon Dean (189), captain J.P. Person (215) and heavyweight captain Trevor Morris.

Hare suffered a season-ending injury and finished his career with 131 victories. Neal did not wrestle and is two wins shy of becoming the first-ever female in Wayne County history to reach the 100-victory plateau.

Morris is also nearing the 100-win mark and could achieve in either the season-ending conference tournament or the 1-A/2-A eastern regionals.

Against the Rams, Andy Seaman ignited a 15-0 run with a first-period fall. Baker, who has 140-plus wins during his four-year career, followed with a shutout against James Thomas. Sammy Ennis (130) capped the spurt with a third-period fall.

Greene Central pulled within 15-12, but could get no closer.

Josh Holmes (145) and Andrew Sass (160) each pinned their respective opponent, while 152-pounder Jacob Roberts scored a major decision. The Eagles led 31-12.

The Rams claimed their last individual win at 171.

Rosewood closed out the match with a 27-0 run when Dean received a forfeit. Person and Cosgrove each earned a pin, while Morris decisioned the Rams' Josh Jones 6-1. Zach Behrend (103) picked up a forfeit.

The Eagles wrestled in the Carolina/Albemarle 1-A Conference tournament on Saturday. Results will appear in Monday's edition of the News-Argus.

* Ayden-Grifton boys 54, Rosewood 49 -- Sophomore Dustin Dougherty turned back-to-back steals into uncontested layups within a 20-second span for the visiting Chargers (9-7 overall, 6-0 Carolina 1-A). Dougherty led all scorers with 24 points. Trevor Cox and Johnathan Franks tallied 13 points apiece for the Eagles, while Will Caughran and Garrett Burns each contributed eight points. Rosewood (6-11) fell to 3-3 in conference play.

* Wayne Country Day boys 66, Epiphany 49 -- Cameron Ford led four Chargers in double figures with 20 points. Stole Stewart chipped in 16 points. Hil Tanner and Tanner Pate supplied 14 and 12 points, respectively. Senior men's basketball players David Wilson and Josh Gregory handled the coaching duties in the absence of Terry Jones, who was out with an illness. WCDS improved to 17-1 overall.

* Eastern Wayne girls 41, Southern Wayne 33 -- Maurriel Baker emerged the Warriors' top scorer with 10 points. Brittany Scurlock added nine, while Carly Givens and Morgan Smith knocked down seven points apiece. The Warriors (12-2 overall) entertain Wilson Hunt on Tuesday afternoon.

* Goldsboro boys 58, Tarboro 53 -- Resean Brewington paced a balanced offensive attack with 16 points for the victorious Cougars. Mike Langston delivered a nine-point outing. Jerran Reed, Auntre Thigpen and Devonte White scored eight points apiece. Goldsboro (9-6 overall) improved to 4-2 against Eastern Plains 2-A opposition.

Freshmen

* J.H. Rose boys 74, Goldsboro 67 -- Adan Hobbs scored a team-best 18 points in the Cougars' regular-season finale. Ricky Shaw added 15, while Ra De Simms and Tyree Boseman collected 14 and 12 points, respectively. Goldsboro concluded the year 11-5 overall.

Middle schools

* Wayne Christian boys 48, St. Mary's 17 -- Josiah Davis posted a double-double, 12 points and 15 rebounds, to go along with two blocked shots. Chase Darden poured in a game-high 17 points for the Eagles. Chandler Harrell turned in a solid effort with five points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Wayne Christian (13-4 overall) travels to Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday.

* Wayne Country Day boys 22, Epiphany 19 -- Zach Brewer-Kirby knocked down nine points for the Chargers. Tee Uzzell (six points), Cole Davis (five) and Elliot Best (two) also contributed to the win. The Chargers (2-9 overall) entertain Kerr-Vance Academy on Tuesday.

* Wayne Christian girls 29, St. Mary's 17 -- Brooke Barfield tallied 19 of her career-high 21 points in the second half for the Eagles, who evened their record at 6-6 overall. Victoria Combs, Meredith Burroughs and Courtney Howell also scratched in the scoring column for Wayne Christian. The Eagles visit Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday.
