SEVEN SPRINGS -- Thanks to some tough defense and the ability to overcome a difficult night at the free throw line Spring Creek pulled out a 50-47 victory over Princeton on Thursday night.
The win was the Gators first in Carolina 1-A Conference play this season.
Melanique DeVeaux had 15 points, nine steals, four assists and three rebounds for the Gators (3-15, 1-5 CC). Tasha Whitfield tacked on 10 points and 11 rebounds. Richelle Butler tallied seven points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Amber Wood led Princeton (8-12, 3-3 CC) with 12 points and Brittany Baker had 10.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- After dropping back-to-back games Princeton got back on track with a 68-47 win at Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek on Thursday.
Ryan Daughtry scored a game-high 32 points for the Dogs (15-5 overall, 4-2 CC). Chris Hinton contributed 20 and Michael Radford pitched in 11.
Melvin Deveaux and Eugene Robinson both scored nine points for the Gators (5-10, 2-4 CC) and Brian Kornegay added eight.

Cougar boys take title
Senior Anthony Council prevailed in two individual events and ran the anchor leg on a winning relay team as Goldsboro High seized its first-ever Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference men's indoor track and field championship.
Council broke the tape first in the 55-meter dash (6.25 seconds) and captured the 300-meter run in 36.9 seconds. His two gold medals helped the Cougars escape runner-up North Pitt 63-60 in the team standings.
Donald Pollock claimed the shot put title with a throw of 49 feet, 9 3/4 inches. Teammate Iveon Sprangle took first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.87 seconds.
The Cougars' quartet of Charles Smith, Miekiyell Wilson, Enrique Moses and Council placed first in the 1,600-meter relay. Overall, seven Goldsboro competitors combined for 13 medals on the day.
Greene Central ended up third overall with 47 points in the four-team meet. Farmville Central accumulated 30 points.

Bogle leads Dawgs
Princeton's Jania Bogle emerged victorious in three individual events during the Class 1-A Carolina Conference women's indoor track and field championship meet contested Wednesday.
Bogle claimed the long jump (15 feet), 55-meter dash (7.28 seconds) and 300-meter run (48.82). Her trifecta helped the Bulldogs compile 60 points finish second overall behind county archrival North Johnston (96 points) in the four-team meet at Rosewood.
Bogle qualified for the state meet in the 55 meters.
Teammate Zeara McKoy won the 55 hurdles and 500 run, and grabbed second in the high jump.
Jennifer Page paced Rosewood to a third-place finish with runner-up efforts in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs. Teammate Brittany Duffley ended up fifth in both races, and fourth overall in the 1,000.
On the boys' side, Princeton claimed the top spot in eight of 14 events and amassed a meet-winning 103 points. Rosewood took second with 55, followed by Spring Creek (36) and North Johnston (10).
A newcomer to Princeton, sophomore Travaria Wilson picked up conference championships in the long jump, high jump, triple jump and 55 hurdles.
The Eagles' quartet of Leo Verceles-Zara, Jordan Adams, Zack Fink and Casey Conerly seized the 3,200-meter relay title. The foursome of Brandon Ash, Fink, Adams and Billy Page collected the 1,600 relay crown.
Page also won the 500 meters.
Spring Creek's Alex Casey pulled off a first-place time in the 1,600 meters. Teammate Jaelyn Lee won the 55-meter dash (6.85) and placed second in the high jump and triple jump.
The top two finishers in each event earned All-Carolina Conference recognition.

* Mount Olive boys 49, Greenwood 46 -- Tyshawn Vann scored 14 points and Breyon Johnson finished with 12 as Mount Olive (13-0, 6-0) remained undefeated. Shaquille Wright led Greenwood with 16 points, Andrew Robinson had 10 and Octaveous McCarter supplied 12. Mount Olive hosts Spring Creek on Monday.
