PIKEVILLE -- Chantel Gaines led all scorers with 14 points as Charles B. Aycock turned back Kinston 47-42 on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference girls basketball scene Friday evening.

Gaines picked the Vikings for six steals as the Golden Falcons (2-14 overall, 1-1 ECC) snapped an 11-game losing streak. Courtney Sheeks contributed 10 points and six rebounds, while Tori Benton supplied six points and seven rebounds.

"We had a couple of players step up tonight and we've been waiting for that for a while now," said CBA coach Carrie Reynell. "Courtney played a great game offensively for us. Her rebounds and points came at very opportune times.

"Tori also did a great job on the boards."

Yolanda Pitt delivered six points and six assists, while Briana Reid chipped in seven points. Kendra Speight rounded out Aycock's scoring with four points.

Adrienne Lewis paced Kinston with 13 points.

Saints nearly pull stunner

DUDLEY -- Sophomore Casey Elliott completed a four-point play with 1.7 seconds left and No. 1-ranked Wilson Beddingfield escaped Southern Wayne 70-69 on Friday evening.

Trailing 69-66, Elliott received the ball as precious time ticked off the clock. With several Saint defenders draped around her, Elliott banked a 3-pointer off the glass and drew the foul. She sank the free throw and lifted the Bruins to their 22nd consecutive, regular-season victory in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Junior Monique Spry led the Bruins (16-0 overall, 2-0 ECC) with 25 points, while Jean Best added 23. Elliott supplied 14 points.

Shakoria Clark drained six 3-pointers and finished with 21 points for the Saints. Lynnesha Leonard added 18, while Clarice Sherard chipped nine.

Southern Wayne (8-7, 0-2 ECC) visits Kinston on Tuesday.

Baker leads Dawgs

CALYPSO -- Brittany Baker poured in a career-high 40 points to lead Princeton to a 54-46, Carolina 1-A Conference win at North Duplin on Friday.

Amber Wood tallied nine points for Princeton (7-9 overall, 2-0 CC).

Jodie Williamson led the Rebels (3-5, 0-2) with 11 points. Heather Hudson had nine and Rebecca Coats pitched in eight.

Princeton visits North Johnston on Tuesday, while North Duplin travels to Ayden-Grifton.

Chargers bag Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Melanique Deveaux tallied a team-best 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in Spring Creek's 47-24 loss to Carolina 1-A Conference rival Ayden-Grifton.

Richelle Butler (four points) finished as the Gators' top rebounder with nine, while Maura Phipps (four points) pulled down seven boards. Shaquita Brooks added four points and five rebounds.

The Gators trailed 25-16 at halftime.

"The third and fourth quarter we struggled on offense, but (our) defense looked decent during the fourth quarter," said Spring Creek coach Amanda Ramfjord.

Spring Creek (2-9 overall, 0-2 CC) visits Rosewood on Tuesday.

Eagles come back

ROCKY MOUNT -- Kayla Kennedy's steal and layup in the final 60 seconds capped a miraculous comeback as Wayne Christian edged Faith Christian of Rocky Mount 46-44 on Friday evening.

Kennedy's game-winning basket capped an 18-4 run for the Eagles, who trailed by 12 points early in the final period. Kennedy finished with five points, while Brittany Sullivan was Wayne Christian's top scorer with 18.

Hanna Kaler added eight points, while Charity Wright scored six.

Wayne Christian (8-5 overall) is the guest of New Life Camp on Jan. 25.

Chargers on a roll

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Country Day won its sixth straight game with a 48-36 conquest of Coastal Plains Independent 1-A rival Kerr-Vance Academy on Friday.

Bridgette Briggs pumped in a game-high 17 points. Kim Martell scored 10, while Brooke Norris and Catherine Ford each added six points.

The Eagles (8-7, 2-0 CPIC) host Greenfield on Tuesday.

Boys

Saints 2-0 in ECC

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne erased a 19-point halftime deficit and nipped Eastern Carolina 3-A member Wilson Beddingfield 79-73 in double overtime on Friday evening.

The Saints opened the second half with a 17-0 run and eventually outscored the Bruins 20-3 in the third quarter.

"Defensively, we turned it up in the third quarter," said Southern Wayne coach Russell Stephens. "We preached at halftime that defense wins games, especially conference home games. It was a tale of two teams in the second half for us."

John Hart led Southern Wayne with 26 points, including 15 from 3-point range. Sophomore Desmond Raiford contributed a double-double, 24 points and 13 rebounds. Kendrick Thompson and James Jones added 11 points apiece.

Dwight Smith handed out six assists.

"Dwight did a good job distributing the ball," said Stephens.

Southern Wayne (6-10 overall, 2-0 ECC) visits state-ranked Kinston on Tuesday.

Eagles grounded

Rosewood dropped to 0-2 in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 56-36 loss to North Johnston on Friday.

Tyler Muntz had 10 points for the Eagles (4-9, 0-2 CC).

Daniel Radford finished with 24 for North Johnston.

Rosewood plays host to Spring Creek on Tuesday.

Bulldogs down Rebels

CALYPSO -- Princeton outscored North Duplin 23-14 in the second half to break open a 36-31 ballgame and earn a 59-45, Carolina 1-A Conference road win on Friday.

The Bulldogs' Chris Hinton's recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Josh Barefoot added 14 points while going 10 for 10 from the free throw line for the Bulldogs. Ryan Daughtry finished with 14.

Quentin Graham led North Duplin with 16 points and Terell Midyette added 10.

Princeton (13-3 overall, 2-0 CC) visits North Johnston on Tuesday, while North Duplin (2-6, 0-2) travels to Ayden-Grifton.

Kinston hammers CBA

PIKEVILLE -- Bo Ingram led all scorers with 25 points and state-ranked Kinston cruised past Charles B. Aycock 81-47 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play on Friday.

The Golden Falcons trailed 55-42 heading into the fourth, but were outscored 24-5 over the last eight minutes as turnovers and Kinston's height were too much to overcome.

Khendra Reid led the Golden Falcons with 12 points. Tyheim Pitt had nine and Jordan Riley finished with five.

Aycock (3-13 overall, 1-1 ECC) travels to Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Eagles rally to win

ROCKY MOUNT -- Trailing 37-25 at halftime, Wayne Christian rallied for a 65-62 non-conference win at Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Friday night.

The Eagles took their first lead of the game at 61-60 with less than two minutes to play. Eric Williams finished with a game-high 28 points to go along with 18 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Matt Davis contributed 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Colton Wood had 10 points and five boards. Shea Gleasman netted eight points and seven rebounds. Adam Brannan had seven points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Timmy Watson led Faith with 17 points.

Wayne Christian (6-8 overall) entertains Johnston Christian on Thursday.

Conquerors suffer loss

Four Conquerors scored in double figures but it wasn't enough as Faith Christian fell 71-65 at home to N.C. Christian School Association Coastal Region 2-A member Falls Road on Friday.

Taylor Stocks had 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Jeremy Sandlin added a double-double with 13 points and 20 rebounds. Brad Floars contributed 10 points and Eric Powell tallied nine.

Faith hosts Neuse Christian on Tuesday.

JV sports

* Goldsboro boys 73, Greene Central 69 -- Resean Brewington led three Cougars in double figures with 25 points. Devonte White added 19 and Quantigo Holloman contributed 13. Goldsboro (7-4 overall) claimed its fourth straight win and improved to 2-0 against Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opposition.

* Rosewood boys 68, North Johnston 64, 4 OT's -- Cody Harris led the Eagles with 22 points as Rosewood (4-9 overall, 1-1 Carolina 1-A Conference) prevailed in four overtimes. Trevor Cox added 17 points and Jonathan Franks put in 13.

* Wayne Christian girls 39, Faith Christian-RM 32 -- The Eagles outscored the Patriots 7-0 in overtime and handed Faith Christian its first defeat of the season. Charity Wright led Wayne Christian with 13 points and five rebounds. Carly Hightower (nine points), Devan Isenhower (seven points), Courtney Barrow (five points) and Kayla Kennedy (five points) also contributed to the win. The Eagles play host to Johnston Christian on Thursday.

Middle schools

* Wayne Christian boys 44, Greenville Christian 35 -- Chase Darden paced the Eagles with a game-high 18 points and dished out five assists. Josiah Davis pumped in 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Chandler Harrell scored eight and grabbed 12 boards. Wayne Christian (11-1 overall) puts its 5-0 Carolina Christian 1-A Conference record on the line at home Tuesday against Cresset Christian.
