Trojan men finish 1-2 at Nickel City tournament

BUFFALO. N.Y. -- Senior setter Zach Wilson dished out 106 assists and the Mount Olive College men's volleyball team posted a 1-2 record in the three-team Nickel City tournament this weekend.
Wilson handed out 46 assists in the Trojans' season-opening 30-20, 30-22, 27-30, 30-28 victory over Medaille on Saturday afternoon. Pedro Penate recorded 14 kills, while Mike Carroll added eight kills, six blocks and four service aces. Jose Lanier tallied seven blocks and Osvaldo Perez finished with six digs.
The Trojans, however, dropped a pair of matches Sunday against teams ranked in the AVCA/CSTV Division III preseason top 15 poll.
Nazareth (N.Y.) College, ranked No. 7, cruised to a 30-27, 30-25, 30-19 triumph over Mount Olive. Penate led the Trojans with 13 kills and six digs, while Lanier added eight kills and three blocks. Wilson finished with 34 assists.
Mount Olive concluded tournament play with a 30-21, 30-19, 30-27 loss to No. 6 New York University. Lanier led the Trojans with eight kills and Perez added seven kills. Carroll recorded three blocks and Wilson tallied 26 assists.
Wilson averaged 10.6 assists per game during the tournament.
The Trojans return home Saturday for the MOC Tri-Match at Kornegay Arena. They'll play at Eastern Mennonite (Va.) at 11 a.m. and oppose King (Tenn.) at 3 p.m.
