PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock kept the defensive clamps tight on Wilson Fike's Jeremy Atkinson for one half Friday evening, but couldn't duplicate the effort in the second half.

Atkinson got untracked in the third quarter and finished with a game-high 21 points in the Golden Demons' 66-40, non-conference victory over the Golden Falcons. Atkinson managed just five points in the first 16 minutes of action.

Jonathan Williams emerged Aycock's top scorer with 10 points. Isaac Ryals added nine points, while Jordan Reilly chipped in eight.

C.B. Aycock (2-9 overall) is the guest of North Lenoir on Jan. 2.

Chargers endure loss

RALEIGH -- Defending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A state champion Word of God exploded for 26 second-quarter points and rolled past Wayne Country Day 81-48 on Friday evening.

It was matchup between two of the state's top five teams.

Word of God led 22-12 after one quarter, but walked into the locker room with a sizable 48-17 advantage at halftime. The Chargers, who had their six-game win streak snapped, managed two less points than WOG in the second half.

Reco McCarter paced the Chargers with 12 points. Landon Case provided 11 points, while Floronta Wynn scored 10. Jeff Franklin, Josh Gregory, Kevin Martell and Vaughn Eason also scratched in the scoring column.

Wayne Country Day (11-3 overall) played either Victory Christian or Mt. Zion late Saturday afternoon.

WCDS athletes honored

David Wilson and Shellie Sullivan received Most Valuable Player accolades during the Wayne Country Day fall athletics awards ceremony.

Wilson, a senior captain, guided the men's soccer team to a third-place finish in the highly-competitive Class 1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference. The Chargers posted 10 wins and advanced to the quarterfinals of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.

Goalkeeper Ryan Ford and Cory Robert were tabbed for coach's awards. Wilson, Ford and Will Wolfe were named to the All-CPIC team. Cameron Ford and Matt Wolfe were selected to All-CPIC honorable mention team.

Sullivan helped lead the Charger volleyball team to a runner-up finish in regular-season and conference tournament play. She earned All-CPIC recognition along with teammate Jessica Lewis. Stephanie Sykes and Erin Taylor were named All-CPIC honorable mention.

Lewis received the most improved award and Sykes copped the coach's award.

In girls' tennis, Mack Thompson (most improved), Stephanie Knutson (coach's award) and Sarah Best (extra effort) were recognized for their efforts this season. Catherine Ford was selected to the All-CPIC team, while Thompson was honorable mention.

Eighth-grader Hil Tanner was named the MVP in junior varsity boys' soccer. Taylor Ingram picked up the most improved award, while Cody Neal earned the coach's award.
