PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock opened defense of its Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference regular-season wrestling championship with a 52-15 rout of Wilson Hunt on Tuesday evening.
The Golden Falcons, who collected just three pins, triumphed in 10 of 13 contested individual bouts and won 11 matches overall.
"We wrestled well against a much-improved Wilson Hunt team ... very aggressive all phases tonight," said Aycock coach Mark Bass. "The coaching staff tries to stress the importance of 'setting the tone' in each individual match. Tonight, we did just that."
Coming off a top-20 finish in the highly-competitive WRAL Invitational, the Golden Falcons (4-1 overall) wrestled strong against the Warriors. Joseph Conner (125 pounds), Brandon Bailey (130) and Freddie Coley (171) -- all first-year starters -- each pinned their respective opponent.
"Freddie has been battling some nagging injuries so far this season," said Bass. "He had some time the previous week to heal up and get strong, and the time off really showed as a positive on the mat tonight."
Senior Drake Gurley (119) and 160-pounder Josh Grimes each recorded a technical fall. Nick Bentley (103), Kevin Carmel (135), Ryan Butts (152) and heavyweight Khiry Reid each won by decision.
Jarrett Covar (215) earned an injury default and 112-pounder Justin Farrell drew a forfeit.
C.B. Aycock returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Knightdale Duals.
