SEVEN SPRINGS -- The Rosewood wrestling team triumphed in the first four contested individual matches and eased past Spring Creek 44-33 on Tuesday evening.

"This was not a pretty match, but we'll take the win however we can get it this year," said Rosewood coach Bill Edmundson. "We are still struggling to get wrestlers where they need to be with their weight restrictions. Having a couple of key starters out of the lineup didn't help matters, either."

Andy Seaman put the Eagles ahead with a first-period fall against 125-pounder Mario Siquiano. J.D. Baker, who bumped up a weight class, earned revenge with a 5-1 decision over Matt Richter at 130.

"I asked him (J.D.) if he wanted to bump up for the rematch and he said 'whatever will help the team, I'll do it,'" said Edmundson. "That was one of the key decisions that helped us win the match. J.D. has the heart of a champion."

Scott Pate followed with a 74-second fall against the Gators' Minek Ford at 135 pounds. Sammy Ennis capped Rosewood's 21-0 run with a forfeit at 140 pounds.

The Gators dominated the middleweights and closed the gap to 27-24.

Ryan McCabe (145), Sebastian Jackson (152), Will Lowder (171) and Ross Montafia (189) each recorded either a first- or third-period pin. Andrew Sass (160) pinned Spring Creek's Alex Dunmire during that stretch to protect the slim advantage.

Rosewood (4-4 overall) earned back-to-back victories from Brandon Dean (215) and heavyweight Trevor Morris. The Gators (0-4) remained within striking distance with wins from 103-pounder Garrette Lewis and 112-pounder Daniel Richter. But the Eagles' Kelly Cosgrove sealed the outcome with a second-period fall over Jacob Coronado.

"She weighed in at 108 pounds and bumped up to 119 pounds for the finale," said Edmundson. "Kelly is a very tough wrestler and didn't hesitate when given the chance to secure the win."

The Eagles entertain Princeton in a rescheduled match at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Girls basketball

Warriors climb to 7-2

Eastern Wayne improved to 7-2 overall with a 65-55 win over visiting Jacksonville on Tuesday night.

Brittani Billups paced the Warriors attack with 29 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, four blocks and four steals. Tiara McIntyre finished with 14 points, Jazmine Middleton had eight and Lindsey Frederick contributed six.

Stephanie Rogers led Jacksonville (5-6) with 18 points.

Eastern Wayne hosts North Lenoir tonight.

Fike trips up GC

WILSON --Greene Central suffered a 47-31 loss at Wilson Fike on Tuesday.

Shonice Pettaway scored a game-high 12 points for the Rams. Tete Petaway had seven points and Jocelyn Conner pitched in six.

Jameka Thompson led the Demons with 11 points.

Greene Central (1-9) travels to Northern Nash on Thursday.

Gryphons down Cougars

Goldsboro shot just 4 of 21 from the field in the second half and watched a 29-26 halftime lead slip away in a 57-44 loss to visiting Rocky Mount on Tuesday night.

"The biggest thing was the energy we started the game with we didn't finish the game with," Goldsboro head coach Brandy Smith said. "We didn't get into our offense and they capitalized on the mistakes we made. We missed a lot of opportunities around the basket in the second half."

Millicent Kornegay led the Cougars with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kiana Williams had 10 points and six assists and Victoria Williams, Danielle Williams and Ziara McDuffie each contributed six points.

Goldsboro (4-6) visits Wilson Fike on Thursday.

Boys basketball

Eagles fall at home

Louisburg traveled to Rosewood on Tuesday night and handed the Eagles a 53-39 defeat.

Stephen McIntyre finished with 14 points, Tyler Muntz added 10 and Holt Rains finished with nine.

Rosewood (4-4) visits Rocky Mount Preps on Jan. 2.

EW tops Jacksonville

Cody Kirkham scored 17 points, Jamir Thomas added 16 and Eastern Wayne knocked off previously unbeaten Jacksonville 58-55 on Tuesday evening.

Jamir Thomas finished with nine points, Colton Butler had six and Rashid Williams tallied five.

Rasheed Shivers had 15 points for Jacksonville.

Eastern Wayne (2-7) hosts North Lenoir tonight.

RM drops Goldsboro

Tashawn Mabry poured in 24 points to lead Rocky Mount to an 80-70 non-conference win over Goldsboro on Tuesday.

The Cougars rallied to tie the game at 37-37 at halftime, but were outscored 43-33 in the second half.

Keovanta McDuffie was Goldsboro's (6-4) leading scorer with 20 points. Demetrio Irby tallied 18 points and Aric Sinclair pitched in eight.

The Cougars travel to Wilson Fike on Thursday.
