Trojans fall in overtime

CHARLOTTE -- A waived off basket and crucial turnover enabled Queens University of Charlotte to upset No. 15-ranked Mount Olive College 89-84 in a Conference Carolinas men's basketball game Thursday evening.

The Trojans (3-1 overall, 1-1 CC) lost on the Royals' homecourt for the third consecutive season, and second time as a top 25 team.

Kendrick Easley led four Mount Olive players in double figures with 18 points. Brandon Streeter provided a double-double (16 points, 17 rebounds), while Mike Holloman matched his career high with 16 points.

Despite having three shots blocked in the final minute of regulation, Queens eventually drew a foul and Darnell Evans drained both free throws to force overtime.

Evans put Queens back on top 16 seconds into the extra session, but Easley's runner tied the game and Josh Brown but the Trojans on top 82-80 with 3:56 left. After a Queens free throw, Easley hit a pair of free throws to give Mount Olive an 84-81 lead with 3:11 remaining in overtime.

Mount Olive would not score again.

Queens regained the lead 85-84 on Reggie Hopkins' basket with 1:18 remaining. The score was 87-84 with less than 10 seconds left when Mount Olive appeared to tie the game on a three-pointer by Melton. But the basket was waved off due to a Trojan time out that was called prior to the shot. Queens forced a turnover and hit two more free throws to seal the win.

The Trojans shot 54.0 percent from the field (31-for-57), but only 59.0 percent from the free throw line (19-for-32).

Trojan women prevail

CHARLOTTE -- Lakeisha Monroe scored 20 of her career-high 26 points in the first half as Mount Olive withstood a late rally to defeat Queens 85-80.

Tomeka Prichard, who recorded her first-ever collegiate double-double (13 points, career-best 10 rebounds) sank two free throws with one second left to seal the win.

Senior point guard Keona Corley was 7-for-8 from the free throw line and finished with 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Brittney Robich added 10 points and Brittany Miller came within a point of giving the Trojans five players with double figures.

Mount Olive (2-2 overall) remained perfect in two Conference Carolinas outings this season.

The first half saw 13 lead changes and six ties before Monroe's two free throws with 2:28 remaining put Mount Olive ahead to stay 39-38. Prichard and Shequanta McGee both hit 3-pointers in the final two minutes and Keshaun Mozee's basket with four seconds left gave the Trojans a 49-41 halftime lead.

Robich halted an early Queens run with a three-pointer and Prichard's trey with 14:48 remaining gave Mount Olive its biggest lead at 62-49. But a Trojan scoring drought of more than five minutes allowed the Royals to claw their way back into the game.

Queens eventually pulled within 81-78 with 40 seconds left. Mozee hit a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left to make it a two-possession game, but Erin Goldner's basket with four seconds left closed the gap to 83-80.

Prichard was fouled with one second left and hit both free throws to clinch the win and keep Mount Olive unbeaten in conference play.
