Wayne Country Day's first-ever swim meet in school history ended in resounding success Wednesday evening at the Family Y pool.

Five Chargers posted state-qualifying times during the season-opening meet, leaving first-year coach Bonnie Hughes gushing with pride after a long evening of competition.

"I have been impressed with the efforts and attitudes of this new team, but I had no idea that we would have five individuals qualify in eight events for the state championship meet at our very first competition," said Hughes.

Ellen Elmore earned a trip to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Classes 1-A/2-A championships with runner-up finishes in the 100 freestyle (1 minute, 11.91 seconds) and 200 free (2:41.92). Teammate Rebecca Thompson also bested the state standard with a time of 1:13.1 in the 100 free.

Will Nolan, Thomas Elmore and Thomas Yarboro each qualified for the state meet in the 50 free. Nolan ended up third in 27.15, followed by Elmore's fourth-place showing of 29.41. Yarboro swam a time of 31.68, but did not place in the four-team meet.

Nolan and Elmore also qualified in the 100 free. Nolan claimed fifth in 1:08.04, while Elmore took seventh in 1:08.86.

Wayne Country Day emerged victorious in the girls 200 free relay. The quartet of Hannah Pettus, Rebecca Thompson, Virginia Mayo and Elmore edged Parrott Academy by less than a second. The foursome touched the wall in 2:16.63.

Golden Falcons pinned

CLAYTON -- Charles B. Aycock emerged victorious in just five individual matches and endured a 43-24, non-conference defeat against West Johnston on Wednesday evening.

Justin Farrell (112 pounds), Josh Grimes (171) and heavyweight Khiry Reid each pinned their respective opponent. Farrell needed nearly two periods to stick T.J. Supple, while Grimes pinned Willie Demrah with 30 seconds left in the third period.

Reid made quick work of James King with a first-period fall.

Drake Gurley, who earned his 100th career victory in the Falcon Invitational, claimed an 8-4 decision over Miguel Gutierrez at 119 pounds. First-year starter Freddie Coley (160) picked up a 12-7 decision over Mark Landers.

The Golden Falcons return to action Saturday in the Pierce-Davis Memorial at SouthWest Edgecombe. First-round matches begin at 9 a.m.

Rosewood prevails

WILSON -- Rosewood opened the dual-team portion of its season in dominating fashion with a 56-21, non-conference thrashing of Wilson Beddingfield on Wednesday evening.

The Eagles recorded eight pins in 13 of 14 contested matches.

"It's always good to get a win," said Rosewood head coach Bill Edmundson. "A lot of the younger guys had not experienced the excitement of one full team against another team."

Josh Holmes remained unbeaten in eight outings with a third-period fall at 152 pounds. Senior captains J.D. Baker (125 pounds), Chris Hare (130), Brandon Dean (215), heavyweight Trevor Morris, Kelly Cosgrove (112) and Cameron Lowe (145) also recorded pins.

Andrew Sass earned a 5-3 decision at 160 pounds.

The Eagles wrestle again Saturday in the Pierce-Davis Memorial at SouthWest Edgecombe.

Saints dealt defeat

DUDLEY -- Jon Hart emerged Southern Wayne's top scorer with 13 points, but it wasn't enough in a 50-37 loss against Wilmington New Hanover, the state's No. 1-ranked Class 4-A team.

Dwight Smith added 11 points for the Saints, who remained winless in two outings.

David Pellom and Ty Walker scored 21 and 20 points, respectively, for New Hanover.

Southern Wayne entertains county rival Goldsboro on Friday.

Girls basketball

Saints prevail

JACKSONVILLE -- Southern Wayne opened its season with a 49-43 victory at Jacksonville on Tuesday.

Shakoria Clark paced the Saints with 15 points. Lynnesha Leonard chipped in 14.

Stephanie Rogers finished with a team-high 18 points for Jacksonville.

Gators drop close one

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek dropped a heartbreaker 62-61 to Midway on Tuesday.

Melanique Deveaux led the Gators with 26 points and Tasha Whitfield added 15 points.

Spring Creek (0-1 overall) visits Hobbton today.

SW earns split

JACKSONVILLE -- Led by Reshesha Bright's 10 points, Jacksonville knocked off Southern Wayne 27-22 on Tuesday.

Kanesha Jones led the Saints (1-1 overall) with nine points and five steals, and Brittany Brewington scored eight points.

Southern Wayne picked up a 28-8 win at Princeton on Monday.

Brewington led the Saints with seven points.
