MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive seniors Mariangelix Cordero and Sam Mitchell celebrated Senior Day as the Trojans defeated Converse 30-18, 30-28, 30-23 in a Conference Carolinas women's volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Kornegay Arena.

Cordero recorded 40 assists and five aces. Mitchell shared match-high honors with Racey Bartley with 18 kills.

With the win, Mount Olive clinched the No. 5 seed and a first-round bye in next week's Conference Carolinas Tournament. The Trojans travel to No. 4 seed Anderson Wednesday for a quarterfinal-round match-up.

Mallory Peavler led Mount Olive defensively with 13 digs.

Mount Olive and Anderson will face each other in the conference tournament for the first time since 2002. The two teams split this year's season series, Mount Olive winning the rematch Friday night at Kornegay Arena.

Match time Wednesday is 6:30 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinal round Friday. Anderson University is the host for the semifinals and championship.

Women's soccer

MOUNT OLIVE -- Gina Dos Santos and April Jacobs were named to the first team, while Alyecia Higgins and Caitlyn Wright both earned third-team honors as the 2007 All-Conference Carolinas women's soccer team was announced Saturday during an awards banquet at Mount Olive College.

Jacobs becomes the first player in Trojan women's soccer history to earn all-conference honors, while Dos Santos is now a three-time honoree and Wright is a two-time selection.

Dos Santos, a senior midfielder from Whitehall, Pa., has ranked among the national and conference leaders in assists throughout the season. Dos Santos finished with nine assists to go with five goals in 2007. Dos Santos concludes her career as the Trojans' all-time career leader in goals with 48 and in points with 123. Dos Santos recorded scored three goals against Southern Virginia this season for her third collegiate hat trick. She earned all-conference second team honors in her freshman and sophomore years.

Jacobs, a senior midfielder from Fayetteville, has also been nationally ranked in assists this season. Jacobs finished 2007 with six goals and seven assists. Jacobs, who entered the 2007 season leading all active NCAA Division II players in career assists, finishes her career with 49 assists, which could place her in the top 15 on the all-time NCAA II assists list. Jacobs joins Dos Santos as the only two Trojans to surpass the career 100-point mark, finishing with 101 points. Jacobs was a first team All-American in 2006.

Higgins, a freshman from Fayetteville, tied for second on the team in goals with six. She scored a pair of goals in the Trojans' 2-0 win over USC Aiken. She also scored a late goal in a crucial 2-0 conference victory over St. Andrews.

Wright, a senior from Titusville, Fla., has been the Trojans' sweeper for the past four years. She helped Mount Olive's defense hold nine of 11 conference opponents to one goal or less this season, including five shutouts. The Trojans defense limited conference opponents to an average of 0.80 goals per game during the 2007 regular season.
